Lost Woods and Found Park (Tag: Lawrence)

Post by Zelda/Sheik on Mon Oct 10, 2011 9:34 pm

From where she had arrived in one of the many alleyways of Portal City, Zelda called out for Impa a few times just to make certain that her guardian was in fact not around instead of just being undetectable, as that was not exactly an uncommon occurrence with her. The princess herself had developed a good ability to sense if Impa was around long before she had embarked on her Sheikah training, but even so, she had no luck in finding any trace of her anywhere nearby. Furthermore, she hadn't heard her familiar voice calling for her by name, either her alias or her true name… that alone added to the ever mounting proof that Zelda had managed to wind up somewhere very different than the bottom of the well. Where in Hyrule had she been transported? Rather, where in the world had she been taken, as this bright, metallic city was definitely not of Hyrule…

Zelda knew that normally, when she was lost, staying put until help could find her was the best course of action. However, given the exact circumstances of her current predicament as well as the fact that she couldn't sense Impa anywhere near her, she had followed her instincts wisely to set forth and investigate this strange place. This city was grander than even Hyrule Castle Town itself… it was vast, gigantic, with buildings that managed to make her own castle look small, and even some that towered over Ganon's Castle. The streets were busy albeit not too crowded, and the gridded layout helped in her navigation even though she still had no idea where she was headed. She had been able to ascertain that she was in a place called Portal City, and it seemed to be in a completely different dimension than Hyrule, given the types of technology and even the citizens here. Some of them appeared that they might very well could have been from Hyrule or similar lands, but many regardless of their respective species (and she had encountered a few so far that made even Hyrule's diversity look minimal) appeared to be from completely different worlds all together. The further and further she went into the city, it seemed that she had managed to stumble into a completely different dimension and reality… but… how had that happened? She knew she had fallen through a warp point somehow, and that alone had possibly had perfect timing when it intercepted her from the force that had been pulling her down the well… still, Zelda wanted to know what had happened back there. It might have just been the evil she knew resided in the well, but regardless as to how she had lucked out in not having been taken by it, she just hoped that Impa and everyone were safe back in Hyrule and that she herself could return to them soon.

So far, the disguised Zelda had managed to keep any of her lingering fear in check, and that alone had mostly transitioned to simple confusion, at least as far as a conscious level was concerned. She wanted to know more about this place and how she could get home… for the time being though, since she had no idea where to even begin looking, she found herself wandering into a nearby park, finding the familiar sight of flora to be very welcome indeed, even if it was somewhat different from what she was used to back in Hyrule. Perhaps taking a little while to gather more of her thoughts and think things through more here could prove useful… her mind made up, the young Sheik continued through the park, trying to enjoy the scenery as best she could as her mind began to slow down from the nonstop racing it had been doing.

Lawrence had found himself wandering the streets of Portal City that afternoon, once again feeling too uncomfortable to stick around the Factory for long after he finished charging. There wasn't really anything he could do about it either, as the Evil Emperor probably wouldn't act on a minion's bad feeling. So, the butler did as he was doing for the past few weeks: only staying at Factory Zeta long enough to recharge, interacting with SIR as little as possible, then heading back to the city to wander around some more. Maybe one of these days he'd go hunt down Layla for another fight as that would be a little more productive than just wandering, but for the moment he wasn't quite in the mood.

The park was quickly becoming one of the places you'd most likely find the butler on any given day. It was usually pretty quiet there, and on the rare occasion some of the visitors were rowdy, Lawrence could easily avoid them. This was one of the quiet days, with only a few other people around, and nature doing its own thing in the background. He was reminded a bit of fall on Zanifar, with the overcast skies and the trees beginning to change the colors of their leaves.

The butler was just minding his own business and walking along the path when someone up ahead of him caught his optics. There was a child heading in his direction in a somewhat striking outfit. He couldn't quite tell what gender they were from just a glance since their face was partially obscured, and while he could scan for it he saw no reason to. The youth had pointed ears, but since he didn't see a tail as well they weren't a Markazian. The eye pattern on the front of their outfit seemed vaguely familiar, though he couldn't quite place where he'd seen it before.

The child looked a bit lost, but Lawrence figured someone else could deal with the problem. He certainly wasn't a police officer, after all.

As Zelda continued to wander through the park for a long while and get her thoughts more in order, she began to think more clearly about what she should try to find out about this world first… she had already learned from many signs in the city that she was in a place called Portal City, but where exactly was this world and how did people wind up here? Still, those questions would be best determined at a library or other source of information here… this world seemed to be so technologically advanced that she couldn't help but wonder if books were even still in existence, especially given the magically bright signs she'd seen across the streets already. The strangest thing though is that she knew the signs were in a language she had never seen before, and yet she had been able to read them perfectly. Perhaps that was a side effect of having been brought here… that, or her own magic had tapped into her subconscious somehow…

Still, if she was to find any answers at a library or something similar, it was probably best to find out where one was in the first place. Zelda hadn't run across any maps on her way to the park or seen any buildings around that looked like they might be what she was looking for… maybe she could ask someone around here if they knew where the library was. After all, taking that step to ask about it might turn out to be even more helpful than simply ending up with the knowledge of a specific location in the city. Her mind made up, Zelda glanced about the park, quickly scanning the few people wandering about it to see who might be the best person to ask for directions.

A couple of people over on a grassy knoll enjoying more of the park seemed to be good candidates, but before she could look much further, someone on the path heading in her direction caught her eye. He was a sharply dressed metallic man with blue eyes, not entirely unlike some of the automatons she had passed by on her way to the park. Zelda had no concept of robots yet, so to her, even with the keener insight she had been gaining, a robot seemed to be just like a person… only made of metal instead of flesh. Besides, something about him told her that he was quite knowledgable and that he might know even more helpful information than simply the location of a building. Her mind made up, she approached him as the two began to cross paths.

"Excuse me sir… would you happen to know where the library is?" asked Zelda, stepping towards Lawrence, managing to speak clearly even as the bandages were still partially concealing the lower part of her face. "I am new in town, so I'm not quite sure where anything is."

And it seemed fate felt like messing with Lawrence today, as the child walked right up to him and asked him a question. Though it really wasn't any of his business, he still stopped short as not replying would be rather rude. "The library? It's quite close by, in the same district as this park, in fact." He took a second to reference his internal map, noting the direction and distance. "It's to the east, roughly two blocks away."

When the oddly dressed child mentioned being new in town, Lawrence nodded. "Oh, I see. You did have the look of someone who had just arrived recently. This can be a very odd world at times, but you get used to it eventually."

The butler would've left it at that, but then his memory banks produced the answer to the query he subconsciously sent, just where he saw that eye symbol before. It was smaller and in a different color entirely, but he remembered seeing it on Impa's armor. "Hrm, I may be able to assist you a bit more . . . a friend of mine wears the same symbol as you on their armor, perhaps you two know each other?"

"Ah, I see… thank you," said Zelda, glancing off in the direction of the library before returning her gaze to the metallic man and nodding to him. A moment later, after his remark regarding her having the look of someone who was in fact new to this world, she smiled a little sheepishly, inwardly wondering if she'd stood out of place that much or if she really had appeared to have been that lost. Regardless, his admission that the world was occasionally odd did help ease her mind somewhat, and she did appreciate his confidence that she would get used to it. At the same time though, Zelda couldn't help but think that she didn't fully want to get used to it, as more than anything she wanted to attempt to return to Hyrule as soon as possible. Still, until she could return home, it was comforting to know that she would likely get used to this strange, new world. Feeling a bit better about being new here, she smiled a bit more before adding, "That's good to know. I appreciate that advice."

At the butler's next statement though, Zelda's eyes instantly widened and her jaw dropped very slightly. She wasn't certain how she managed to mostly suppress the gasp caught in her throat, much less how she hadn't blurted out her guardian's name, but a friend of his wore the Eye of the Sheikah… on their armor no less! There was only one person that that description could possibly match… but… how was Impa here? Had she also been pulled in by the same mysterious force from the well and just landed in a different part of town? No… that was impossible… there was no way that she could have already made friends with the metallic man before her. At the same time though, it was extremely unlikely that the friend he had mentioned could have been anyone else. As her mind quickly ran through all of these thoughts, Zelda looked to his bright blue eyes, managing to determine even better than she had previously that he was trustworthy.

Steeling her courage for whatever answer he might have for her, Zelda paused for the briefest of moments before asking, "Do you know Impa?"

Lawrence was a bit surprised himself that the child seemed to know Impa. Perhaps this was a student of hers? Either way, that faint surprise faded, leaving the butler inwardly pleased that he could help these two find each other. He nodded again and began to speak. "Yes, I do know Impa. She is roughly four inches taller than me, has white hair and red eyes much like yours, and wears light armor with that very same eye marking just below the collar? She arrived here several months ago, and I've fought by her side quite a few times. She also helped me work through a few issues I was having outside of battle; that was how we finally became friends rather than just allies."

Lawrence paused for a moment, thinking there was something that slipped from his processor. After another second he realized that neither he or the child had introduced themselves to each other yet. "Well, any friend of Impa is a friend of mine, so I believe introductions are in order? My name is Lawrence, it's a pleasure to meet you. And what might your name be, little one?"

Zelda's eyes widened a bit more at Lawrence's positive answer, her expression continuing to grow brighter as he continued on to describe Impa's appearance. Aside from his knowing her name, this alone proved that he knew her! So Impa was here after all… that was an immense relief… or, at least it was until he noted that Impa had arrived here several months ago. Coupled with the fact that it wasn't reasonable or at the very least likely that there was time for the robot and the Sheikah to have become friends since Zelda herself had arrived on the Breach, this new information wound up giving the disguised princess just about as much confusion as relief.

How could Impa have been here for several months? She had been right by Zelda's side ever since the princess had been born, especially for the past year… was it possible that Impa had found a similar portal and had been visiting this strange land around their time in Kakariko Village? No, that couldn't be it… she was hardly gone for long periods of time, and she would have definitely mentioned something about finding another world whether it could have helped in their hiding or not. Still, there was absolutely no doubt that the person Lawrence knew was Impa. Zelda might have thought that different periods of time might have had something to do with this conundrum, but whilst she had guarded the Ocarina of Time and understood the general flow of the time stream, she wasn't yet fully aware of the role that different points in time could play relative to different events anywhere. She had a basic idea of such, but not enough that thoughts concerning such entered her head just yet.

Still, no matter how strange it was to hear that Impa had been here for several months, the most important thing was that she was here and that that was a familiar face. That alone would help in her getting used to this strange, new world and hopefully in eventually getting home. Her thoughts starting to slow down again, Zelda smiled again at the mention of Impa fighting by the robot's side, and even more so at his short explanation as to how they had become friends instead of just allies. As he paused, Zelda nodded slightly and stated, "Yes… that description matches Impa perfectly. … … … She is a very skilled warrior, as you appear to be as well… I am glad that she's been able to help you and that you've both become friends."

After Lawrence's next pause and pleasant introduction, Zelda's smile grew a touch more in spite of the bandages that were still partially obscuring the lower part of her face. She nodded in agreement at his first statement, and at his question regarding who she was, Zelda responded, saying, "My name is Sheik. It is very nice to meet you as well, Lawrence."

Sheik. Lawrence thought that was a rather strange name, given its similarity to 'Sheikah'. It also didn't really give much of a clue to its owner's gender, though ostensibly that name would've been more fitting for a boy. Still, asking directly would be too bold a move, so he didn't bother. "That's an interesting name, I suppose. Well then, Sheik, I could take you to Impa if you wish, though I'm not sure how easy it would be to find her at the moment. If you would like to explore the city on your own a bit more, I'm sure you could find her either at the library, or at her room in the Stock Pot Inn. The latter is in the residential district, it's not far from here."

"I suppose it is," agreed Zelda on Lawrence's remark of her alias, smiling a bit in spite of herself. Even though she'd been using it for the past year or so, she was still quite pleased with the name that she and Impa had chosen for her disguise… in a way, it felt natural for her even though it was more of a boy's name, and she was definitely proud of it and how it really was just as much herself as her identity of the Princess of Hyrule was. "It's something of a traditional name of the Sheikah, and since there aren't really many of us left, I guess it was given to me with more meaning than it otherwise might have held."

At Lawrence's offer to help take her to meet Impa, Zelda was intrigued at the prospect of exploring the city, much as she was amused that he mentioned that the library was a likely place to find her guardian. It wasn't surprising that it would have been likely to find Impa at the library, but since she was still very new in town, Zelda much preferred the idea of attempting to catch her at her room here. It was still a bit confusing that Impa had been here for several months and thus been here long enough to procure a room at an inn, but Zelda was still determined to find her as soon as possible. Whilst she knew full well that she could navigate to this Stock Pot Inn, she definitely appreciated Lawrence's offer and was keen to accept it. After all, if he helped get her going in the right direction for at least most of the trip there, then that might help add to her own mental map of this strange town.

"I think I might try to catch her at the inn… and I would be grateful if you could help take me at least part of the way there," replied Zelda, nodding to Lawrence. "Once we get close to it I should be fine, but for finding my way around here while I'm still unfamiliar with the area, I think your company could help a lot."

Lawrence nodded back, and started to lead the way. "Ah, very well then. It would be more reassuring to be led by someone who knows the way, even if it's not for the entire distance. Follow me if you will; we'll have to leave the park and head to the residential district, as I noted earlier."

He made sure Sheik was following him, then started heading towards the park's entrance, keeping a pace where the youth could easily keep up. Lawrence kept up the conversation as he walked, giving into his curiosity about the young Sheikah. "So, I would assume you are a student of Impa's? I'm certain that reaching her level of skill would require quite a bit of training..."

"Thank you, Lawrence," said Zelda, quickly making certain to catch up to him and keep a good pace by his side. She felt quite fortunate that she'd been able to find someone who was not only willing to help her find her way in this strange land, but also someone who knew Impa. So long as she focused on the bonus of having a new ally and on finding her guardian, she was able to let the confusion of Impa having been here for a while sit for the time being. She could think on that later, but she did not wish to burden Lawrence with such. In a similar vein, she did not want to pry as to what sort of being he was. Zelda had read about and seen many people of many races, but she'd never seen a metallic man quite like this. Granted, she had passed by a couple of vaguely similar citizens on her way to the park, but having come from Hyrule where there were no robots, the disguised princess found herself growing rather curious about them. Still, this was something she could learn more about later, as she didn't feel it right to ask Lawrence about robots…. although she could still ask him about something else to learn or about her new ally.

As Zelda kept up with Lawrence as they made their way past the park's entrance, she turned to him at his question, smiling a bit more at his remarks regarding Impa and her level of skill. Zelda, or rather Sheik, had been very pleased with what she'd managed to learn over the past year, but whilst she certainly knew enough to pass for a Sheikah, she knew she still had a long way to go to come anywhere near Impa's level, and even then, she knew that she and her guardian were both different and thus both of them would always have their own particular strengths that shined even as many of their skills intersected.

Still, Zelda greatly appreciated Lawrence's insight, and she nodded once again before replying, saying, "You assume correctly… yes, I am a student of hers. And you're very right on that. She knows a lot and I'm very glad to have her as my teacher… and given the nature of what I'm learning, as my guardian as well. … … … It would seem you know at least some about Hyrule… might I ask where you come from?"

Lawrence thought for a moment, trying to think of how to best word his response. From what little he knew, Hyrule was a medieval kingdom located in one region on a single planet. They were probably just figuring out astronomy at best, so how do you explain different galaxies and such to someone from a culture with a much lower technology level? It would take some clever wording to be sure, but he thought he could explain it adequately. "I am from another world entirely, one where travel between planets was commonplace. There were more robots and organic races there, though I've never seen anyone quite like you Hyruleans. Well, there were the Markazians, but they had tails as well as pointed ears. It wasn't always the nicest universe, but it was home, I suppose."

The butler kept leading the way, minding the street signs as he walked down the sidewalk. When one of the signals at a crosswalk they were approaching flashed a don't walk sign, Lawrence held one arm out to keep Sheik from going further. "We will have to wait for the traffic to finish passing before we can cross. While we're standing here, you could tell me more about Hyrule."

Zelda listened rather intently as Lawrence began to describe where he was from. As she'd guessed, he was from a completely different world, one that was most unlike Hyrule as well as the city the two of them had found themselves in by some means. She wasn't too familiar with different planets with respect to their positions relative to Hyrule's world, but Zelda had a pretty basic set of knowledge of the stars and other similar celestial bodies that dotted the night sky from her home, such that the concept of traveling between different planets whilst entirely foreign to her made some degree of sense once she thought about it. The more she thought about that concept and on travel across great distances, namely by means of any of the sacred songs Impa had taught her to transport her between the six temples of Hyrule, the less confusing and more intriguing it became to her. Lawrence had explained the general idea of his home universe to her quite well with all things considered, and at the same time, he had unknowingly planted more seeds of curiosity with regards to basic astronomy in the mind of the disguised princess.

At his mention of robots and organic beings, Zelda determined that "robot" must have been the proper term for Lawrence as well as any other metallic being similar to him. That answered that question she'd had sitting in her head… robots appeared to be quite interesting beings, for even though they seemed to have been constructed from metal, they appeared to not be so different from any of the peoples of Hyrule. She was a little perplexed at the mention of the Markazians, but the tails aside, pointed ears weren't surprising at all to her. After all, save the Zoras and Gorons, the only race in Hyrule without pointed ears was the Gerudo. Considering that, Zelda almost felt out of place here for her pointed ears as well as her different attire, but with as many different people as there were here, that sense didn't linger too long.

Zelda smiled a bit as Lawrence finished his explanation, thinking to herself how true that last statement was, especially with regards to how Hyrule was still home for her despite the evil that was threatening to further take over the land. Nodding slightly, she stated, "Home is what matters, no matter where it is. If nothing else, the less nice aspects of it make the nice ones all the more special."

The young Hylian continued to follow Lawrence down the flat, stone pavement, soon glancing up and noticing yet another sign that she knew she normally shouldn't have been able to read, one that said something about not walking. She slowed her pace curiously, just in time to nearly run into Lawrence's newly extended arm. She stopped just short of it and glanced up to him, listening at his brief explanation of the crosswalk, soon observing that pedestrians as well as these strange horseless, metallic carts were moving on certain paths but others perpendicular to them had stopped, making certain not to collide with each other on these busy roads. Seeing this, Zelda nodded in understanding at Lawrence's statement, still finding herself intrigued by the concept of traffic lights. "Ah… I see… this is a very interesting and useful system."

At Lawrence's request for her to tell him more about Hyrule, Zelda pondered for a few moments, thinking of how best to answer him. Much as how she was unfamiliar with his world, he only seemed to have a base knowledge of Hyrule, so she hoped she'd be able to help explain the world well for him. Deciding to describe the Hyrule she knew as opposed to what Ganondorf was presently turning it into, she gathered her final thoughts before turning back to her new ally. "Hyrule is a mythical kingdom, although it might seem simple in many ways compared to what you are used to. It's a large land, all of it under the rule of the Royal Family of Hyrule. The biggest area is Hyrule Field, located basically in the center of the main kingdom… it's full of grassy, rolling hills, and it's a general connection point for all of the other main areas… and each of those varies in their geography, mostly given away by their names. Generally speaking, those are Hyrule Castle Town, Death Mountain, Kakariko Village, Zora's River, Kokiri Forest, Lake Hylia, and Gerudo Valley. To describe Hyrule as a general area really isn't possible, but without going into too much detail I hope that helps to give you an idea of its range of places. We do have some good technology there, although I'm starting to see more that it's nothing quite like anything here in this city… still, the buildings are sturdy and many of them are pretty impressive. Some parts of the world rely on magic, so I guess that makes up for some of the differences in technology. After all, aside from traveling via horse, it's a very useful feature to be able to warp to a certain location by playing a particular song."

Zelda paused for a few moments to let some of that sink in, soon thinking of another couple of questions thanks to her having observed the strange metallic carts continuing to bustle about the streets. "Ah… might I ask how some of that travel you mentioned takes place? Is it anything like what this city has?"

It was Lawrence's turn to listen intently at the description of Hyrule. If he closed his optics for a moment, he could almost see it: a lively castle town, the rolling fields outside it, a peaceful village and a great mountain towering over it, a shining river and lake, and a huge and verdant forest of the sort you could get lost in for days. He wasn't quite sure what a Gerudo was, so he was drawing a blank in that regard, but otherwise he had a pretty good mental picture of Hyrule now. The robot made a note to himself that he needed to get over to the library and research a bit more about the place, though. "Ah, Hyrule sounds like a wonderful place. There were a few kingdoms and empires that ruled entire planets in my universe, but nothing quite like what you've described. It would be very interesting to visit, if that were possible."

While Sheik spoke, the traffic lights began to change, and after a moment, the cars in the lane they had to cross finally stopped. A few seconds later, the crosswalk sign switched to 'Walk', and Lawrence started to cross the street. As he made sure the Sheikah youth was following him, the butler tried to answer the questions regarding travel. "Oh no, vehicles like these can't travel between planets, but having the technology to build them is one of the steps toward space travel. A civilization must first achieve powered flight and master the sky before setting their sights any loftier."

Zelda smiled a bit more at Lawrence's comments regarding Hyrule, nodding to his mention of its vague similarity to other worlds and also at his note of visiting the kingdom. She knew that the second part was incredibly unlikely, but the fact that he thought that her home was interesting enough to merit a visit made her feel quite special. Once again allowing herself to think back on Hyrule even more before Ganondorf had attacked, the disguised princess said, "It is very different from what you are used to, but yes… it is wonderful, and I do hope you would find it interesting."

She had noticed that the strange lights on poles had changed colors whilst another ahead of her switched to a sign that read 'Walk,' but Zelda didn't continue forward until she saw that Lawrence was crossing the street. Making certain to follow after him and keep up with his pace again, she listened as he detailed the general difference between the vehicles here and those that could go between different worlds. Even though she was still incredibly new to the technology of this world, it seemed to make sense that the bustling cars, while impressive, were only a step towards traveling even further and off of the ground. At that point Zelda couldn't help but to imagine one of these strange metallic carts with a pair of large fairy wings much like Navi's… still, as strange as something so large and foreign as many of these vehicles were, perhaps powered flight that could carry people was not so far-fetched after all.

"I see… I guess that makes sense," remarked Zelda, making a mental note of the street corner they had just passed as she walked alongside Lawrence. Smiling to the butler, she added, "It must be amazing to fly."
