POOL OF SOULS
death is but the next great adventure

When your character dies, they are released from their physical form and are transported to the Pool of Souls, situated in the Otherworld. Nergal Senior is the caretaker of the dead, and the Good Doctor is their guide. If your character wishes to return to life on Portal Breach, they will need to pass a trial, from which they will gain one level for their efforts. Once they have successfully completed their trial, the Good Doctor will judge whether the soul is worthy enough to return to the world of the living. If you fail, you will either be given a different trial, have to repeat the same trial, or remain trapped in the Pool of Souls until you are ready to face another trial.

If you wish to drop your character and feel their death is the perfect excuse, you don’t have to do anything. In-character, your character will merely stay in eternal slumber and you can pick them up again whenever you wish after you do a trial to return.

A few things to know, roleplaying-wise:
--Your character wakes up in a capsule from a deep sleep, in an endless white room full of identical capsules, and you must wait inside for someone to come let you out.
--You are dressed in your usual clothes, but they are coloured white, and you are unarmed.
--Your character feels no pain, and though is seemingly solid, is in a ghost-like form that can neither fly nor pass through walls.
--Your character might have a series of powers. You can only use them if you are instructed to do so in your trial. Otherwise, you can't.
--Only Portal Deities (usually the Good Doctor and less often Nergal Senior and Hellboy) set the trials for your characters.

Something else you ought to know is that Portal Breach is essentially a collection of data, and when you die your character is essentially "rebooted". That means that they return to the form they originally had when coming here for the first time. If, for example, during their stay here, they turned into a vampire and died, when they return to life they will no longer be a vampire.

Any questions or concerns can be posted here.

THE BASICS

You might have noticed the three back-up files in your databases. Theses reflect the number of chances you have to recover your original body's shell that you had when you first arrived to Portal Breach. Each time you die, you will refresh at your house, unless you have created a restore point of a certain time of your life time during your stay on the Breach. For example, if you turned into a vampire at some point during your life here, if you never 'saved' your progress and died, you will return to being what you originally were before becoming a vampire.

When your three chances run out, you will fall into Data Purgatory for permanent deletion. Sometimes there are flukes and this can still happen even if you haven't run out of disks. In either case, for your permanent deletion to be prevented, someone that is still alive in opposition of your deletion can sacrifice one of their disks and die with you to guide you out of Purgatory. Unfortunately, two Characters from the same IP address cannot save you if you are in Data Purgatory.

Remember, you will lose a disk every time you die now. However, dying from events or plots may sometimes not remove your disks, in accordance to the Plot Coordinator's wishes. This is due to the fact that death can occur in large numbers during these cases and it would be unfair both for the Pool of Souls to require to take care of so many souls and for the Players to be punished for their Characters dying when it ws not their fault in the first plce.

The only way you will be able to regain back-up disks is by buying them with points.

Trials will not always be necessary when you die. You will now be given the choice of whether your Character will undergo a trial or not. Depending on the complexity of the trial, you gain a level for compensation.

After you have spent a week of Real Time in the Pool of Souls trying to complete a trial, you are allowed to log into the Chatbox as if you were alive. You cannot do so before one week is up. You are, however, not allowed to post new threads or threads that happened during the time you spent in the Pool of Souls until two weeks have passed since then. During this timespan, you are free to post in threads previously unfinished, but new threads can only be made afterwards.

If you are in Data Purgatory, everything is frozen, both old threads and new. You cannot enter the Chatbox, nor can you participate elsewhere until you are brought back to life. When undergoing permanent deletion, you cannot leave Data Purgatory unless your deletion is prevented.

Thank you for your understanding. Logging off...
