The Quest for Lon Lon Cows

Post by Impa on Wed Aug 03, 2011 4:04 pm

In the days around Impa beginning to get settled in her new room at the Stock Pot Inn, as well of those of her and Link exploring even more of the vast city, the Sheikah had been working on modifying her room to make it more her own. As it had continued to transform into something resembling a cross between her old house in Kakariko Village and her room at Hyrule Castle, Impa was inwardly very pleased at how far her room was coming. So far, she had been able to line the walls with books, set up the loft section properly with a bed along the far edge, carefully put up her Mask of Truth and other Sheikah artifacts that she had on her person or had managed to find and acquire her (namely from the Shadow Temple), and get the furniture and decor more to her liking, but even as the place now felt like home… Impa couldn't help but to think that something was missing… something very important.

It was at that point that she remembered that Link had also had this same very important addition to his own house, at least in the future… as she mulled over that thought for a few moments, Impa couldn't help but wonder that if the boy had this same item in his current room, if he might feel even more as though this were home, and thus feel even better about his lot here than he already did. Thinking that they might be able to find such important acquisitions here in this world, Impa studied a map of the Breach for a few moments, making a mental note of a possible destination before she soon left her room, making sure that the door was securely shut as she made her way to the young hero's room.

Very soon, she had arrived at his door, and Impa rapped her knuckles on it as she waited for Link to come and answer it. Hopefully, he would find this new idea for a potential quest to be a good one.

Link didn't stay in his room often or for long, being inside for too long got pretty boring. In fact he often didn't even come back to the room at night if he was far from the city exploring, but he was used to sleeping in the ground. Today, however, he was in his room, looking at the city map. He had most of the town memorized by now, but it seemed like things changed every so often, buildings appearing or disappearing.

He heard the knock and looked up, wondering who would be coming to see him. He hoped out of the chair and ran over to the door, pulling it open to see Impa. "Hi!" He greeted her, grinning and stepping to the side so she could come in.

"Hello Link," greeted Impa, returning Link's grin and entering his room as he stepped aside for her. Moving to stand towards the center of the room and turning to face the lad again, she added, "I trust you are well today."

After he had responded, Impa glanced about the room for a brief moment before returning her gaze to him, stating, "I believe I might have figured out a new quest for the two of us to embark on… those are always quite fun adventures, after all, and it could be a grand, new one if you are interested."

Pausing for a few seconds, Impa read the excitement evident in the boy's eyes, she broadened her smile just a touch before saying, "Tell me Link… think about both of our homes back in Hyrule for a moment. Whilst we have both done well to replicate those here, what is one thing that we're missing that's not furniture or a decoration?"

Link's face light up at the mention of a new adventure, although Impa's question left him frowning with confusion. Their homes? Link didn't have much in his house, a bed, a table, a stool... but that was furniture... he had gardening tools, but why would Impa be asking about those? And he couldn't remember if she had gardening tools in her house, he remembered tons of books, a staircase, and the cow in the cage-

Oh wait, Link had had a cow in his house too, in the future! He'd never figured out how Malon had got it up there. "A cow?" He blurted out, before realizing this might not be the smartest sounding answer.

"What? You had a cow in your house?" Asked Tatl, and Link nodded to her.

"That's right," said Impa, nodding to Link and finding herself unable to suppress a smile at the way he had quickly responded. At Tatl's incredulous glance and question, Impa turned her gaze to the fairy, stating, "Yes, at least at some point, we both had a cow in our homes back in Hyrule. It might seem like an odd thing to have, but they are nice, well-behaved companions even inside a room, and they do grant a nearly never-ending supply of milk. Water is great, but it is good to have milk each day as well. And surprisingly, despite their size, cows are fairly low maintenance."

After pausing for another moment, Impa turned back to Link, meeting the boy's eyes and smiling a touch more to him as she asked, "In order to help our rooms feel even more like home and make sure we can have that unbeatable taste of Lon Lon Milk again, would you like to go on a quest to try to find a cow for each of us?"

Link grinned and nodded. "Yeah, that sounds like fun!" The milk from the cold glowing side-ways treasure chest full of food, known as the fridge, was alright but it wasn't as good as the milk he was used to.

"Hey, wait a minute," Tatl snapped, flying between the two to make sure she had their attention. "You can't just bring a cow into the inn! Your horse isn't allowed inside, a cow wouldn't be any different! It'd be even bigger!"

Link looked at the fairy. She had a point, at least his tree-house was his, the inn wasn't. "I'm sure we can keep them with Epona." He reassured her. The parking deck was slowly turning into a barn...

"Excellent," said Impa, nodding slightly and smiling at Link's grin and happy reaction. Before either of them could say anything more though, Tatl quite expectedly flew between the two of them as if attempting to rein in a daft plan, or at least one that the small fairy was completely and utterly confused by. Unsurprised at all, Impa let the fairy have her say, figuring that it would be best for her to get this out of her system before they left on their quest. Having already been shown where Epona was currently staying, Impa nodding in agreement, fully expecting that the parking facilities were a viable option for them to house their cows for the time being. Once they acquired them, she knew she might also be able to setup portals or something similar in their rooms so that they could more easily access the cows… regardless, it was definitely a nice thought that they might be able to have something else to help them feel more at home in this large city.

"That sounds like an excellent idea, Link," stated Impa, glancing back to the boy. "I had thought about that as a possible area for them… no matter where they stay, shall we set off to try and find a pair?"

Tatl thought about this and then said, "Alright! But I'm not helping you clean up after them." Link grinned, knowing this was her way of saying she saw no problems in the plan and agreeing to help.

"Let's go!" Link said, but then stopped. "Where should we look?" It was true that in all the exploring he'd done, he'd not seen a single cow! And of cause they probably couldn't get one that someone already owned unless they had a lot of rup- credits to buy it. A cow had to be expensive to buy. In Hyrule and Termina he'd seen un-owned cows in caves sometimes, but he'd not seen any in the caves he'd visited here, not yet at least.

"Not to worry, Tatl… they are surprisingly clean and easy to clean up after," said Impa, smiling at the fairy before Link let out an excited exclamation about heading out. At his question as to where they might look, Impa pulled out a map of the world she had taken with her and laid it out across the adjacent table, speeding it out and soon pointing to a large, green area on it. "Before I came over here, I had studied this map quite extensively, and this area seems to be our best option… the Grasslands. They should not take us too long to get to, and returning should be even easier. Let us head on out."

After receiving a positive response from Link, Impa pocketed the map and led the way out of the boy's room, right before continuing down the stairs, out of the inn, and off in the direction of the Grasslands. Hopefully, despite the distance, it would not take them too long to arrive there.

After a good walk far outside the city the trail opened up and a fresh breeze met their faces. Link grinned, running forward into the wide expanse of grassy field. It was so much like Hyrule field, yet at the same time, so different. But the warm wind in his hair was refreshing after the city.

"I don't see any cows here! How far do you think we'll have to go?" Tatl said, flying up a little as if it would help her to see over the next embankment. Link didn't see anything that looked like fences or farms for there to be cows, nor did he see any actual cows, but he couldn't see too far before the hills rolled away into the horizon. He'd have to bring Epona here next time, she'd love it!

Once the three had arrived at the Grasslands, Impa couldn't help but grin slightly as link ran forward into the field. The lad's thoughts mirrored her own quite closely, in that whilst this area was very similar to Hyrule Field, at the same time, it was rather different. Still, the familiar feel of it and the comfortable terrain were both extremely welcome, and the Sheikah soon found herself taking in a deep breath of the fresh air. Something as simple as this was proving to be rather special for her, for even though this was not Hyrule, it was still nice to be able to venture to areas that were so reminiscent of it.

As Tatl asked about how far they might have to go, Impa scanned the horizon and continued walking forward before saying, "I am not certain. I have not actually been out to the grasslands yet, so the likely spots for cows could be near or far. Regardless, exploring an open field before you is always a fun adventure."

Allowing herself to think back happily on many times she'd spent in Hyrule Field by herself, with the princess, Link, or even the two of them, Impa wound up smiling again, inwardly wondering if any of the secrets hidden in Hyrule Field might have parallel versions here. Considering that, the Sheikah couldn't help but think that she wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they found a large boulder and heard some mooing near its vicinity…

Unknown to the travellers, just on the other side of the hill rested a huge pinap- peahat. Rumored to be the spirits of dead flowers, peahats were far from as graceful and delicate as that sounds. The tiny sounds of their footsstps approaching woke the monstrous peahat, which took flight suddenly in front of them, it's blade-like roots spinning to propel it off the ground, heading for the closest one, the short one.

Link jogged up the hill in front of them, looking from side to side to see if he could see anything. What he didn't see, and probably should have, was the giant peahat that he'd almost walked into. He sprang backwards but not fast enough to entirely avoid being hit by it's spinning blades of death.

He drew his sword and shield in a flash. "Look out!" He said, warning Impa, though he expected she'd seen the thing by now. Hitting a peahat wasn't easy, you had to aim at it's soft underside, which mean avoiding the blades and aiming well. Link slashed twice with his sword, trying to land a good hit.
