From Hyrule Castle to the Inn

Post by Impa on Tue Aug 02, 2011 7:27 pm

    Date: July 27
    Time: 11:07 am

Although she had been on the Breach for several days and had more or less got settled, one thing that Impa had not yet got to do (namely in part due to her having been caught up in various quests and the like) was to find a place to stay. Whilst she knew that she guarded the Shadow Temple, to her, it was not quite the place to stay, at least not for the use of a house… and even though she could have probably stayed with Link and Tatl in their room, she respected the young hero's space and knew that she needed her own as well. After having very carefully considered her options and thought about the numerous conversations she and Link had shared regarding the in and how nice of a place it was, Impa had decided that she too would seek to rent a room at the inn.

The day that she had finally had a chance to do so, Impa made her way down the steps from where she had gone to inform Link of her decision. The young hero had seemed very pleased that Impa was going to be staying here as well, and the Sheikah couldn't help but to think that in some ways, this arrangement might wind up being more convenient than the boy living in the Kokiri Forest and her back at Hyrule Castle, or even at her old house in Kakariko Village. Still, although Impa looked forward to the day that they could return home, she was pleased that there was at least a nice, convenient, and customizable place to stay.

As Impa returned to the lobby of the Stock Pot Inn, she looked about for the other Link, the one from the future. The Link from her time had informed her that he worked at the inn and could help get her set up with a room, although she did not see him anywhere immediately. Thinking that he was most likely behind the desk, Impa stepped over to it, placing a hand on the desk as she did so, glancing about and wondering if the young boy was around.

"Hello?" asked Impa, just in case if the lad was around but still within earshot.

The boy in question was within earshot indeed; in his office behind the reception desk, scolding his pet piglet for upturning the waste paper basket and playing with all the rubbish inside.

    "Hello?"

Link stopped glaring at his pet and lifted his head to look at the door that separated his office form the desk. Customers! He moved for the door, paused, turned around and scooped up the messy pig. Better bring him along lest he decided to make a bigger mess than what it currently is.

So with the piglet held above his head like a pot, he made his way through the door.

"Aa!" he cried happily at recognising the lady on the other side of the desk as the same lady who visited the other Link so often. He set Ganon the pig on the desk before climbing onto the high receptionist chair, waving as he sat down. "What can I do for you today?" read his first note to the lady. Speaking of which, he still haven't learnt her name even after how many times she visit the other Link.

He looked up at the lady, curiously staring. Was she a hylian like the other Link? She was from the same time period as him so perhaps yes? Same time period...? Hadn't he seen a stained glass window that resembled this woman somewhat? He squinted at the lady then shook his head. No, no. Must be his imagination. What are the chances of somebody from the stained glass window appearing before him like this? Plus, he couldn't even remember the window clearly so it must be just a figment of his imagination.

When Link reacted happily at seeing her and waved upon taking a seat, Impa smiled to him before returning his wave. It was nice to see the young lad in good spirits and even though they had never actually directly met, she was pleased to get to meet him here. She was inwardly a bit amused at seeing the small, black pig that accompanied him, especially when she saw how the boy was carrying him, and it seemed that he had a nice pet. When Link penned his first note to her, Impa quickly read it before meeting his gaze again, still smiling softly as she said, "I would like to see about acquiring a room here, preferably on the fourth floor, if possible. I've been in the city for a while, and from what I have heard from your similarly named friend, this is quite a nice place."

Whilst Impa was pleased to have any room here, she did have a preference for one on the fourth floor namely because that was the floor that Link lived on. Given that the two of them were close friends and did quite a bit together around his police work, the duo felt that it would be the best possible fit if it could be arranged.

On the fourth floor? But there were so many free rooms in the inn (an obvious fact since the corridors of each floor was so quiet) so why specifically the fourth? Yes, it does have a nicer view so it's little wonder that somebody will ask for it. It was also higher up thus further from the street below so it's a lot less noisier though the bell tolling at the top is much louder on that floor.

He scrolled through his mental list of current 4th floor occupants and finally remembered that the other Link also resided in the fourth floor. He smiled widely and nodded, happy for Link and Tatl at being able to meet somebody they knew. Maybe he could meet somebody from his world too one day - anybody, Tetra and her pirates, Aryll, Grandma...

The piglet's knocking over of his pencil pot brought him back from his mental gallery of loved ones and he smiled apologetically at the woman. Holding up one finger in a 'one moment, please' pose before he rummaged through his cardkey box hoping to find her a room as close to Link and Tatl's as possible.

"Aa!" he cried for the second time of the day before handing the woman a cardkey marked with the number '421'

He also added a note quickly afterwards before the woman decides to leave immediately. "I'm sorry, I never caught your name?"

Impa returned Link's apologetic smile with a soft one of her own, and when he gestured that it would be just a moment, she simply nodded to him, understanding and patiently waiting. After a few moments, the young boy exclaimed excitedly again and soon produced a cardkey similar to the one that Impa had seen Link use many times before. It appeared that in addition to the strange money of this world, some of the keys had been replaced by equally odd, stiff cards… well, so long as they worked well, that was what Impa cared about… and perhaps this small cardkey would be easier to keep up with than a metal key…

The Sheikah noted the number 421 on the key and smiled a bit more to herself as she realized that she had been given the room next-door to Link's… it seemed that the lad's future counterpart was just as kind and thoughtful as his past incarnation was. Turning her smile to the boy behind the desk, she nodded, saying, "Thank you very much, for both the room and the particular one at that."

Impa was just about to ask Link something else when the boy quickly scribbled out another note, inquiring about her name. The Sheikah nodded and glanced back to him before answering, saying, "That is all right… I was hoping to finally get the chance to properly introduce myself whilst I was down here. I am Impa… one of the Sheikah, the Sage of Shadow… and a friend of Link's from Hyrule, or rather the older Hyrule before your time." Deciding to save the mention of her job as Princess Zelda's attendant for the moment, Impa paused before asking, "And you are also Link, right?"

His smile widened when the woman thanked him for the room choice then wrote her name down as she said it. Sheikah? He did know what that was and there weren't anybody called that in his timeline. Sage of Shadow though, that reminded him of Makar and Medli, making him pause in his writing and stare at the page for a full ten seconds as he was bombarded with the memories containing the smiling faces of his friends. They were the Sage of Wind and Earth respectively.

He never heard of a Sage of Shadow though the Earth Temple was certainly eerie enough for him to image what Impa's temple must be like. He wondered what happened to the temple in the end. Did Makar and Medli ever went back to them afterwards? He bit his lower lip and shook away these thoughts. They were fine. Surely, they must be fine. If the other Link's timeline had people surviving (Impa being proof of that) then his would too!

So he arranged his face back into a smile again and looked up at the lady who was still at his desk, his new note sliding across the wooden surface for the lady to read. "Yes, I guess Link must be a more popular name than I thought. It's hard to believe I'll meet somebody from the past much less somebody who is also called Link."

He wondered if the other Link ever told Impa what happened to Hyrule in the future....

Impa noted that the young boy seemed to get rather pensive as he thought over her words, and for a moment she hoped that she had not said too much. Still, she knew that he was at the Hero of Time of the future, and from what little she'd heard of the Link from her time regarding his nature and such, he could definitely handle just about anything, even if it was confusing information regarding timestream or even simple facts about herself. As Link's smile returned, Impa's deepened slightly and she shifted her gaze to the new note that he slid forward to her. Her red eyes quickly reading it, she glanced back to the boy and shook her head slightly, saying, "No, it's not exactly common… though it does seem to be a very special name for those with certain destinies… or for those named after them."

Impa wasn't certain if this Link knew yet that he was the Hero of Time in his time, or how much he had learned regarding such matters, so at the risk of not overloading him with information and not coming across as knowing more than he might have expected, she decided to take a different approach. After a slight pause, she asked, "On names… do you happen to know of a Zelda?"

If Impa was able to see about the incarnation of Princess Zelda in this Link's time, then she might be able to help him see that it wasn't so hard to believe that he might meet those from other timelines with his same name and even the same spirit.

"On names… do you happen to know of a Zelda?"

This, he brightened to very much and almost nodded enough to shake his head off. Thankfully, he realised his enthusiasm was probably a bit too exaggerated so he stopped nodding and grin impossibly widely instead. He snatched a fresh piece of paper and started scribbling as fast as his hand could write. "Link and Tatl also said they knew a Princess Zelda too. Though from the sounds of it, she's a lot different from the one I knew. The Zelda I know is actually a pirate captain called Tetra." And will probably smack him across the head for smiling so goofily but he didn't add that on the note.

He scratched just underneath the edges of his cap with the end of his pen as he pondered over the note he wrote then added, "I think the name 'Zelda' runs in her family."

Impa couldn't help but grin herself at Link's visible enthusiasm. It seemed that mentioning someone else across the timestream was just the right route to go in this proper introduction, and she was very pleased that he appeared so happy at this question. As he excitedly scribbled a new note, Impa glanced to it once he was finished, her own grin remaining as she read the text and returned her gaze to the boy.

"The Princess Zelda that Link and Tatl know… is the same Princess Zelda I know… I am her guardian and attendant," stated Impa, still very happy that she was finally able to have a conversation with this Link from the future of Hyrule. Very intrigued by the revelations of the Zelda from his time, Impa continued, "So your Zelda is a pirate, is she? That's fascinating… and somehow, not too surprising, much less different from our Princess Zelda. That might sound odd… but aside from the name she goes by and her active occupation, she does not sound too different from the one that shares her name. Despite her elegant image, the princess is in fact quite the tomboy, and has a determined nature that might even be comparable to that of your friend."

After pausing for just a moment, Impa noted the next bit of text that Link had written, soon saying, "There are some names that run in the Royal Family… but only some individuals are truly worthy of the name of Zelda… I am certain that your friend is definitely one of them."

    A guardian and attendant, hmmm...

Link tried to imagine what such a job must be like though the only image that came to mind was one of those stereotypical handmaids who always looked dainty and petite - a look that differed greatly from the lady who was standing in front of him. Tetra is a secret princess, so what would her attenda....er, that would be Gonzo, right?

"Yes, she is a pirate. I hope your Princess Zelda doesn't," he blinked at the page wondering if there was a nicer way to write 'steal, threatened and barrel-catapulting' but failed. He sighed and wrote "doesn't act like my friend does. She doesn't act like a princess" (or look like one when she's out of her princess form)

"Nobody knew she was a princess (herself included). We all live on islands and there's no royalties who rule over all of the Great Sea. I guess to Tetra, being a princess doesn't mean anything since there's nothing for her to rule over and the place that she was suppose to rule over is no longer there. So I don't know if she's worthy as a princess but she's a great pirate person."

Wow, he wrote a whole page. Quickly spellchecking and satisfied, he turned the sheet aroudn to face Impa then slid it over across the desk.

"They might not act exactly the same, but I it is highly likely that they have more in common than we or even they themselves might realize," mused Impa, having taken the time to carefully read over the nice, extensive page that Link had written for her. Inwardly, she was a little amused to communicate with him this way, but as her Link was already a relatively quiet boy, for the most part, she was not too surprised or even thrown off by this. Whilst she could not read his mind, Impa could tell that Link was thinking that his Zelda (or Tetra, rather) did some particularly questionable things, but she also knew that regardless of those, deep down, she truly was the princess and worthy of her name.

At the mention that Hyrule was no longer there in this Link's time, Impa found herself a bit perplexed as some of the texts she had come across in the library had definitely depicted the history of Hyrule still existing from the same time (at least year-wise) that she was certain this Link was from… if that was the case, yet he knew of Hyrule only from tales of it, then it reasoned to her that there were at least two futures for Hyrule, one where it continued to exist and one where it did not but the descendants from it still did. When she had been in the library on her many visits, Impa had been careful not to read into too many specific events in the future, but she had gleaned enough to know that Hyrule was supposedly going to be around for a long time, at least on one plane. Considering the way that different planes of time worked… that made perfect sense.

After having taken a brief moment to ponder the rest of the boy's newly written text, Impa met his gaze again as she stated, "That's very interesting that nobody knew she was a princess… but considering those aspects of your timeline in the future, that's actually not such a surprise. That world sounds quite fascinating… and it's very insightful of you to reason out Tetra's thinking that way. It's entirely possible that she does feel that way, and her freedom as a pirate enables her to more freely show her personality. And if she is truly a great pirate, person, and friend of yours… then I am certain that she is a worthy princess and worthy of the name of Zelda."

Impa's words made him scratch his cheek slightly in embarressed pride. He was proud and happy that his friend was called worthy and would probably have a stupid grin on his face for the rest of the day from it to. He could just about imagine the pirate crew all puffing out their chest in pride for their captain being complimented so (even if the compliment gave a slight impression of being pretty much fished for).

Ganon the piglet snorted loudly around the reception desk and brought Link to attentiont hat the Sheikah was still standing throughout this whole conversation. "Eh!" he gasped and scribbled a note to Impa, "I shouldn't have kept you standing."

Though he was too interested in this Princess Zelda topic to let the conversation drop. He climbed onto the desk, picked up the digi-glass Megamind made him for Christmas, plucked up Ganon and held the piglet above his head and leapt off the desk so that he was on the Impa's side of the lobby.

He waved for the lady to follow as he climbed the three steps to the raised area of the lobby where the lounge was, placing his pet on one of the seats. "Let's continue our talk over here!" he wrote on the pane of glass in his hands with the letters showing up like blue ink on its surface before showing it to Impa.

Impa simply smiled at Link's quick exclamation and scribbled note, reading it before returning her gaze to him and saying, "That is quite all right, Link. I am actually very used to standing and usually very comfortable with it, but thank you for your consideration."

Whilst Impa was perfectly fine to remain standing, she figured it best to follow after him once he hopped down and gestured for her to do so. If nothing else, it might be best to continue their conversation in a slightly more casual setting even if that only really helped serve to let them sit as well as keep Link from having to wind up being too stuck behind the desk. With that thought, Impa figured that this was likely more beneficial to him than to her, but she did still appreciate the boy's thoughtfulness… it definitely proved him as having the same nature and spirit as the Link from her time.

Impa followed after Link and up the three steps to the cozy lounge of the inn, and at catching the new text he wrote with this fascinating device he now held, she nodded slightly to him, right before saying, "That sounds like an excellent idea." At that, she waited for him to sit and get situated before she moved to take a nearby seat herself, inwardly making notes as to what types of chairs she might be able to customize her new room with.

He took a seat in on the sofa his piglet was snorting and sniffing around on and gestured Impa to sit down too.

Once she was seated, he erased the writing on hid digiglass and started on a new message. "The other Link never talked about the Zelda of his time. What was she like?" If Tetra really was a descendant of her then maybe he could find out something else they could have in common. He couldn't imagine how the line of royalty would suddenly started in the pirates business... "Were the royalties related to pirates? Is that why Tetra was one by the time it reached my time period?"

Aa, so many questions, so little time~

At Link's gesture, Impa nodded her thanks to him and took a seat as well, inwardly marveling at the sheer comfort of the chair that was adjacent to the sofa. Yes… this was definitely something that could give her ideas for how to modify her new room. At Link's next question, Impa's smile took on something of a wistful look… she knew that the princess was still safe back in Hyrule, and that on most planes of time that she herself was still there to look after and protect… but she did still miss the princess very much.

Taking a few moments to think of how best to answer this question, Impa soon returned her gaze to the lad, saying, "Princess Zelda might come across as having a very proper exterior, but despite her polite tendencies, she is very much a tomboy… her interests lie in quite a bit more than one might expect for a princess. She enjoys reading and learning magic, and also riding on our horse when she has the chance. As for her personality, she's very kind and sweet, but she's just as adventurous, brave, and unafraid to speak her mind. She's a very giving and loving princess, wise beyond her years… and I am honored to be able to serve her."

After Link had the chance to respond to that, Impa considered his next question, managing to suppress a hint of amusement as she responded, "In my time, I do not believe so… but it is entirely possible that down the line the royalty either married into some pirate blood, or the nature of the changing world with the rising water encouraged them to adopt a seafaring lifestyle, complete with corsairs… if that happened, I would not be surprised at all if pirates began to stem from this. It would be very interesting to look into."
