Pure, uncensored... music. This was music to the energy vampire's auditory functions, and it at last let loose a most wide and wicked smile. Lawrence might as well have made a deal with the robot devil, and the robot devil was now out to collect another soul for its collection. "I was hoping you would see reason, my dear boy." With a lick of its lips the energy vampire descended and made as if to consume the poor butler.

    Only, it didn't.

NOS-4-A2 suddenly flipped over into an airborne somersault, and it floated upside down, the robot butler still a few inches away. "It involves nothing other than the kind advice from a fellow robot. Mmm, yes." It clapped it hands with a devious impression, and it closed its eye, pressing a claw onto its chest as if reciting some literature. "If you want to be free, Lawrence, then it really is simple. Heed my words, and heed them well." It then opened its eye and gripped at Lawrence's chains, the energy vampire dragging the butler close enough to where the metal upon their faces met. "You choose." It grinned, tongue slithering. "You choose your fate, Lawrence. Not an organic, not a master, and not him -- you. You've got the option installed into that delectable processor chip all along as I have; you just haven't chosen to fall back upon it yet." Using a pointed talon it tapped it playfully against the bald side of Lawrence's forehead plating and chuckled. "The choice had always been yours from the very moment you became self-aware. Risk it, Lawrence. Risk that loneliness and isolation. What are those things compared to agony and perpetual insanity? No..." NOS-4-A2 shook its head and it scowled. "They are nothing compared to being a free robot. To have control at last over your directives and to actually script them yourself. You want that band? That restaurant? Risk it; choose."

    Choose.

Laughter escaped its voice box now, and just like that... the energy vampire made due on its word. Lashing out with one slash from its sharpened claw, Lawrence had consequently been freed, and the butler would fall to his knees. If he hastened to find NOS-4-A2 he would be promptly disappointed. The energy vampire was already flying down a side pipe, its wings flapping softly into the distance and cackling growing fainter by the second.

Choose, Lawrence... Choose, and you shall be set free.

Something had been accomplished on NOS-4-A2's end, but it had nothing to do with Lawrence. Consider the butler spared.

Lawrence braced himself for the vampire perhaps changing his mind and just killing him outright, but it turned out NOS-4-A2 really didn't wish to harm him. He simply floated a bit too close for comfort and and passed along some advice, from one robot to another. Choose for himself? But didn't the butler do that all the time anyway?

He was really confused now, and ran that advice through his processor to the point where he barely noticed NOS cutting him free. The impact on the ground jolted Lawrence out of his near trance state, though. The consequences of the choice made half a minute ago slowly dawned on him. He had said he would leave the vampire alone, and for what? Just some confusing advice he wasn't sure he understood?

No, the more Lawrence thought about it, the more he did understand. The choices that really mattered, ones that influenced what happened to him personally, he wasn't the one making them. That needed to change and soon, no matter what anyone might think of him, even Jo and Zurg. If he was uncomfortable with the next thing Zurg intended for him to do, then he was damn well going to protest! It was easier said than done, though . . . it would probably be best to start with things not involving the Evil Emperor.

That advice wasn't worth leaving NOS-4-A2 alone forever, though. He would leave him alone today as he had no choice, but the next time he crossed paths with the energy sucker, there would be a battle. As for right now, the butler made sure the only damage he had was the dent given to him earlier, then moved to collect his Ice Shrieker.

In the end there were two questions on Lawrence's mind: 'how do I get out of here?', and 'what am I going to tell Zurg about coming back empty-handed again?' That last one made him shudder a little bit, but he still started to make his way out of the darkened cistern. He would think of something, he usually did.
