Searching for the Book of Mudora

Impa nodded her thanks to Link and led the way out of the room, right before the two made their way down the stairs and out of the inn. The air felt a little fresher now that the dark influence had vanished even more throughout the city, and the way the late afternoon sun shone down very nearly reminded Impa of the skies in Hyrule Castle Town around this time of day. Granted, the view was very different, but it was still relatively nice despite the odd city.

Navigating the grid-like roads was pretty simple, and after not too long, the two found themselves in the recreational district and soon at the foot of the steps leading up to the library. Giving the young boy a soft smile and a knowing nod, Impa soon climbed the stairs, right before opening a massive door and holding it open for Link. Once the two fully entered the library and she allowed the door to close, Impa turned to Link again, saying, "I know that you have not been here yet, but I hope you find it interesting. Perhaps we could also find some information for a new quest or few for the two of us."

Link smiled happily as the afternoon sun hit his face. It was nice to see the sun again. After a short walk Impa stopped in front of the steps leading up to what must be their destination. The library was huge, it looked like it could be a temple! Link was getting used to the giant buildings by now, but they were still amazing. he followed her up the steps, watching a few pigeons take flight as they approached.

"I know that you have not been here yet, but I hope you find it interesting. Perhaps we could also find some information for a new quest or few for the two of us."

The boy nodded. He'd had a great time when he and Impa had gone exploring in Hyrule a few times, before he'd left to search for Navi, finding new secrets and exploring places that others hadn't been in years. There had to be a lot of things to discover in Portal Breach, too.

As they entered the smell of books met his nose, a smell he was not altogether familiar with, but that he was sure he'd smelled before. The room was full of a soft light from the flame-less lamps and large windows that were letting the golden sun shine down upon the countless rows of bookshelves. Without even thinking, he ran up and started looked down the different rows, eyes wide in amazement. he had the childish urge to run the length of the aisles between shelves, but decided not to, and turned to make sure Impa was following.

"Where do we look first?" He asked, having no idea how to use a library or what a card catalog was.

Impa couldn't help but smile slightly as Link ran up to the shelves full of books, wide-eyed astonishment evident across the young boy's face. She knew that he wasn't too familiar with books, but that he'd taken even the smallest of interests in them after having been exposed to them at her old house as well as in various other areas, she was glad that he at least found them intriguing enough to investigate.

As Link turned to her to inquire where they might look first, Impa glanced about the shelves before replying, saying, "We would likely have to check for the Other Realms section, or something similar. If we are looking for information on Termina, then we'll have to find anything on geography or related history that does not deal with the Breach. If I recall correctly… there should be a map up ahead that we can check."

Maps were always good. Link started walking in the direction Impa had indicated and soon saw the big library map stuck up on the wall near the checkout desk. Standing in front of it and looking up, he read down the list of different sections that the grand library housed. The writing here was strange, and even more strange was that he'd known how to read it as soon as he'd seen it. He didn't understand how, but all citizens in Portal Breach were able to read the language used here, and they all could speak it as well, so despite that Link's native language was Old Hylian, he could speak not only to the future Link but to people from entirely different worlds.

Looking the map over, the boy finally saw the section labelled 'Other Realms.' It was on the second floor... the entire second floor. It was divided into subsections, and the 'History' subsection seemed like the most logical starting point, because the 'Culture' section would probably only cover recent things. Then again, considering how they'd all come from different times, recent was relative. None-the-less, history was as good of a place as anything! It was up the stairs and to the right, and the subsection was very big.

"Do you think we'll find it here?" He asked Impa, pointing to the second floor history section. A metal, spiral staircase that served as a shortcut to the next floor wasn't far from where they stood by the map.

Impa glanced to where Link had looked, seeing that they had indeed found a highly relevant section. At his question, she nodded to him before saying, "Most likely, yes. Let us have a look."

From there, the two made their way up the metal, spiral staircase that was very close to their current location, and once they hit the second floor, Impa couldn't help but to look around in silent awe. She had already been here before, but given her love of books, she was still very impressed to see his collection here. In a way, it made her miss her own impressive collection back home just due to its familiarity, although she was still pleased to see just by how much this library dwarfed her own shelves. At the same time though, she could not help but wonder if somehow, some of the books that she had copies of herself might actually also be available here.

Once the two made their way over towards the History subsection, the sheer array of books on just this subject seemed infinite and daunting. Still, between the two of them, Impa knew that they could find what they were looking for. Using her eyes of Truth, Impa was soon able to discern their course with the most likely success rate, and she soon motioned forward, saying, "There we are… I believe we'll find what we're looking for about 17 rows in front of us."

Excited, mostly because libraries were new to him and he didn't realize that locating and reading books took a lot of patience, Link ran down the aisles to the spot that Impa had said they'd find the books they sought. As he started looking at the shelve he noticed that the spines of the books had Hylian symbols and writing on them now. This language was used in Termina too, and he realized that the books they were looking for would probably be in the language he was familiar with.

He pulled a children's story collection off the shelf, recognizing it as the book that Anju's Grandmother had read him. Well, he knew what those stories were about, and so he put the book back and pulled out another. Maps... this would have been useful and saved him from spending on those rupees to get maps from Tingle. He flipped through the maps, recognizing Woodfall and Great Bay. This books seemed like they were from what he thought was the present, more proof that Impa was right about the time-stream, if they'd be in the history section.

He slid the atlas book back onto the shelf and pulled out the next book in the line. It seemed older and smelled funny, and the symbol on the leather cover was one he recognized immediately, because he'd seen it all over Ikana Valley. Wrinkling his nose, he opened the book and frowned at what looked like a map of Termina's 4 regions, but had he not known that was what they were he wouldn't have guessed it, they didn't seem familiar at all. Particularly noteworthy was the lack of Clock Town. The field was big and empty and looked very strange without the large town in it's center. This might be important, even if it did smell, so he tucked it under his arm.

He looked at Impa to see if she was having any luck.

Unable to suppress her very slight smile as Link ran ahead of her, Impa slowly walked behind him, catching up to the lad once he had begun to pull a couple of books off of the shelves. Her thoughts were similar to the ones running through Link's head, for even though she had already been to this library, part of her was still fascinated that she was suddenly able to read more than the scripts she had learned when she was younger. It was a strange side effect of having been transported to the Breach, not unlike the weakening of her abilities, but at least this ability to read other languages seemed to be remaining even as her strength and powers returned to themselves.

Whilst Link looked through his own selection of initial books, Impa scanned the spines of several other books, trying to find something that might best answer some of the questions the two of them had come up with earlier. She pulled out a book entitled Beyond Termina's Borders, soon opening it and skimming through the pages, noting that it seemed to detail the mountains, forests, and seas connected to and past Termina itself, and it seemed to go into detail about a certain odd path in the woods, almost a warp point. Raising her eyebrows slightly and realizing that some of this text definitely depicted the Lost Woods, she carefully set the book open on this page on a nearby table. Glancing to Link when he looked to her, Impa nodded to him, smiling slightly as she said, "Those pages right there might explain how you ended up there, Link."

As she left Link to the chance to investigate the pages for himself, Impa perused another few books, investigating and subsequently resolving two before she found another, one that was written in Old Hylian and bore a very familiar mark on it… the symbol of the Sheikah. It seemed to be a book that Impa had sought after for years but had not yet been able to obtain because it had become so rare… it was an old Sheikah archive, one that held many tales and legends that she knew quite well, but it seemed to have a great expanded section of Sheikah writings from and about Termina, including how the Sheikah themselves had never actually lived there outright, but how they had explored the connected land, left the Gossip Stones to help other adventurers from Hyrule there, and how they had sought to leave their own mark there to help ensure the safety of both Hyrule and Termina. Fully engrossed in the tome, Impa continued to pore over the pages, taking in all of the information she could as Link glanced over his own books. She was still very aware of his presence, but right now he researching and book-loving nature had seen to her total enthrallment for the time being.

Link hurried to the table where Impa had place the book, dropping the smelly one on the wooden desk and looking at what she had found. it looked familiar, very familiar! That was definitely the tunnel that he'd used to get to Termina, and probably the one Skull Kid had used before too, since Link knew he'd be apparently going back and forth between Hyrule and Termina, because he'd cursed Kafei a month before Link had arrived there.

Link looked over at Impa again but she was busy with a new book. He turned a few pages in the one she'd shown him, wondering if other people from Hyrule had ever been to Termina. A goron he'd met there had spoken of Dodongo's Cavern, so that had to mean yes, didn't it? He flipped through the pages until he reached the back cover, then closed the book. Swapping it for the smelly book, he started to flip through it's pages as well. It seemed to be about really ancient Termina, and it talked about Ikana when it was the main settlement in the region, and how it often went to war with other nations. As he flipped through it's old pages, Link recognized the name Captain Keeta.

He looked at the name, remembering the giant skeleton and how he'd tested Link and then requested that he take his hat and tell his men it was time to rest, that the war was over. Link wondered if anyone from Termina had arrived here, besides Shaeld- oh! Impa might be interested in meeting him if she was curious about Termina! He had lived there, after all, he might know something. Link closed the book and stood up, tired of sitting. He couldn't sit still for very long, but he didn't want to rush Impa, so he started to walk down the rows of bookshelves again.

Before Impa realized it, she had essentially finished reading the book, even so far as skimming over the parts of the text that covered subjects she already knew quite well. She was a very quick reader, so it had not taken too long, but she had still been absorbed in the book for a little while. She did love to read and when she found a new book, particularly one of great interest to her, she did find herself getting pulled into it if she had the chance. Making a mental note of where the book was located in this library, Impa replaced it on the shelf before glancing around, soon finding that Link had wandered off another couple of rows of bookshelves. Smiling to herself and inwardly hoping that she hadn't begun to bore the boy, Impa took a few more minutes to check over some of the other tomes here before finishing that task, soon turning to make sure she had not lost sight of Link.

Soon catching up to the young boy Impa appeared behind him, saying, "I hope that the book proved useful for you, Link, and I hope that I have not bored you here. I must apologize… it has been a while since I have found such an interesting book."

Link had found a few more books, and was currently being completely confused by a book that was telling him that Zoras had evolved into bird-like people called Ritos. But the book hadn't explained how something so strange had happened. He looked at the pictures of the Ritos in the book, wondering if Ruto would be any less creepy were she one of those.... and he decided that no, there was nothing that could make her less creepy.

He looked up as Impa walked over and smiled.

"I hope that the book proved useful for you, Link, and I hope that I have not bored you here. I must apologize… it has been a while since I have found such an interesting book."

Link shook his head, he hadn't been bored, there were way too many books to look at to be bored! He'd just wanted to see more than the two books he started with. He put the book he was holding back on the shelf and remembered that he'd thought of something to tell Impa, about his friend from Termina. "I have a friend here who lived in Termina, and he lives in the graveyard here now, I don't know if you want to meet him?" He asked.

Impa smiled a bit more when Link shook his head, confirming that he was anything but bored. As the young boy reshelved the book and told Impa about his friend from Termina, Impa raised her eyebrows slightly, nodding a bit as she contemplated Link's offer. Again, she could not help but think on how this appearance of another from their worlds proved yet again that both Hyrule and Termina were still safe on most planes of time… and on another train of thought, at Link's mention of the graveyard, Impa was reminded of one of the things she'd planned to relay to him once they had gotten more settled from the battle.

"Really now… that's quite interesting," stated Impa. "It might not be best to ask him about Termina itself, regardless of which part of its time he came from, but it might be good for him to see that others from the two connected worlds are here. I got much of my information about the land from the books I investigated, so I do not have much to ask him… but it might still be nice to meet someone else from where we are more familiar."

Impa paused for a couple of moments, giving Link the chance to respond before adding, "It seems that Termina is in fact quite separate from Hyrule, but it is very connected to it, but we can discuss that more later. Your mention of a graveyard reminds me of something and is amusingly coincidental… on my first visit here, one of the books I was reading gave very good details of some of the less-traveled areas of the city, the graveyard included. It seems there might be a secret network of tunnels, possibly containing interesting items or treasures there. Are you interested in turning this into a new quest for us?"

Link nodded, thinking that, considering Shaeld had seen his home destroyed by the moon, maybe they shouldn't be questioning him much, it might be a sensitive subject. Tat, who hadn't wanted to come to the library with them, was probably already at the graveyard with Tael. he'd forgotten she was Termina too, but then, she usually didn't have a lot of informative things to say, so he wasn't sure if she'd know anything... so it was good that Impa had found what she wanted to know in books.

It seems that Termina is in fact quite separate from Hyrule, but it is very connected to it, but we can discuss that more later. A secret tunnel in the graveyard? Of course Link was interested! He hadn't had a chance to explore the graveyard yet, first the freezing winter had kept him from exploring too far, and then while Mr. Dark was causing trouble he'd been needed to help in the city. "Yeah, that sounds like a great adventure!" He said, grinning. It was just like old times. Even with everything he'd seen in his young life, Link was always up for exploring someplace new.

"Excellent," stated Impa, nodding to Link and smiling slightly in response to his grin. "Let us be on our way, then."

With that, Impa gestured for Link to join her as the two set all of the books they had investigated back in their proper places. The two of them might have to see to venturing to the library again in the near future, as it was not only a great place to learn new things and gather information, but it might be able to help them find even more quests and adventures to go on. Right now, it seemed that they had already hit one lucky spot in this endeavor of more adventure, and she hoped that they would continue to be able to have them for the entire duration of their time here. Once the duo was set, Link and Impa made their way for the ground floor of the library, set to embark on their latest quest.
