Cosmos, was it hot in here. It was hotter than summer on that tropical island had been. Jo felt like she was experiencing the heat of a thousand suns. Not even her forge could get this hot. As soon as she'd made it through the smog she braced her weight on her knees gasping for breath. But she had to quickly jump out of the way when a spout of flames blocked her path. Why was that in the middle of the path?! Someone could get roasted with it!

She passed around it, trying not to get roasted in the process, and spotted one of several furnaces. Molten metal fell into a boiling pot below. She coughed again, trying to clear her lungs out, but spotted grubs and brain pods at work. They looked fiercer than the ones she'd seen so far on both her trips, buggy little eyes hidden behind goggles that reflected the dancing flames. She looked around, scratching her sweaty hair and pushing it out of her eyes. Now where had Zurg gone....?

She finally spotted him on a catwalk, his form shimmering in the heat from all the surrounding furnaces. Jo was suddenly glad she'd decided to wear a t-shirt and change into her jumpsuit. She made her way over to him, being careful of where she was stepping, hoping she wouldn't startle him so they both ended up black smears in molten metal.

"This is the robotics plant?" she whispered, voice still sore and hoarse from all the fumes. "Where're all the robots?" It was nothing like the robotics plants she had seen throughout her very short lifetime. She looked around now that she was on the catwalk, to see brain pods in booths controlling machinery and the grubs still hammering and pounding away at an almost eerie rhythm. As if they were playing to the tune of a song that only they could hear.

This was the epitome of professionalism!

(Robot Factory theme; kudos to those who know where it's from -- although it says in the comments XD)

"Hah-ah!" Zurg grabbed at a dangling control box and smiled devilishly to her meekly-spoken questions. "This is the first chamber of my robots plant! Here we pound at the refuse that comes down along the conveyor belts." The Evil Emperor pointed to the oncoming flow of garbage that came from all over Planet Z. "Every ounce of metallic garbage, I don't care how small, finds its way here to the furnaces to be smelted down into usable metals and alloys. Reduce, reuse, recycle~!"

He then snarled into the box, his booming voice echoing throughout the intercom system.

    "BREAK TIME!"

The grubs suddenly halted in their work, every single one of them looking up in unison while the brain pods craned their pickled brains to the glowing Evil Emperor.

    A pause... and then...

"OKAY. BREAK TIME IS OVER. GET BACK TO WORK, YOU MAGGOTS!"

And thus work resumed, the grubs going back to their synchronized pounding and the brain pods clicking upon their control boards. Yes, there was no rest for the wicked, and Zurg made sure of that. The Evil Empeor snapped his fingers at the rhythm, for he too could hear it, and he pressed the red button upon the control box. With a whir the catwalk suddenly began to move but if Jo paid closer attention she would realize that it was really a conveyor belt!

They were soon carried away to a gaping maw with jagged, saw-like teeth. It opened and closed and just as it seemed they would be sliced into itty bitty pieces they narrowly passed it just in time, the maw slamming barely an inch behind Jo. Yikes! But the factory didn't stop. It stopped for no one, and apparently so did Zurg.

He was already inspecting his cruel sweat shop with narrowed eyes and arms clasped behind his back. In this chamber were multiple little furnaces with segmented teeth, opening and closing to regulate the flow of garbage. On one side the furnaces consumed the garbage ravenously and on the other the maws released bars of recycled metal. Here grubs either picked at the garbage for inspection or they marked the bars ready for use. Any defects were take out of the line and thrown into bubbling vats. A few were thrown in as a result and the molten metal splashed very close to Jo.

If she didn't know any better, it would seem this place was hazardous to anyone besides the machines. There were oddly no robots, however, so where were they...

Zurg was pretty harsh on those guys. No wonder he'd been surprised with the hour-long break she'd offered Zeb that time he'd been there for the Flea's construction. She also wondered whether the Flea would have been made here if he hadn't gone to her for it to be built.

With the press of the button, the catwalk suddenly lurched forwards and Jo nearly lost her balance. She was startled to see it was a conveyor belt and that they were heading right for a series of chomping metal pieces with jagged edges that looked strangely like teeth. Zurg was unfazed, and Jo grabbed Zurg's arm and sucked in her gut when the teeth narrowly closed behind them.

But he stopped for no one and nothing, already continuing his inspection. Jo followed along behind, still finding the experience interesting and exhilarating besides the near-death experiences--that splash of molten metal was another one adding to the list--though there was not a robot in sight.

"You called this the Alpha block before...." she began, following close behind. Safety was where Zurg was, so she'd stick to him like stink on a hog. "Does that mean you've got more robot plants all over the planet?" It would explain how she hadn't seen any robots actually being made, yet.

While he didn't show it, Zurg's inner smile had stretched out as far as it could go, the Evil Emperor no doubt taking immense satisfaction in Jo's sudden unease. Good. She wanted to see the robot factory and he had made sure she wasn't disappointed! Although they would both need a good scrubbing after this.

Zurg didn't bother to move or take a step forward, he simply let the conveyor belt escort him away. And every moment he swept his ruthless, harsh eyes upon every inch of the chamber. Everything was to his liking, and if he ever found a single thing out of place he would not tolerate it.

"All over the planet?" He scoffed, momentarily sticking out a talon and letting it leave grooves into the recycled metal bars as they passed alongside the differing conveyor belts. "This is the only robots facility on Planet Z. All the others are just subsidiaries, barely reaching the output this one does. Why do you think I re-purposed Carrie's old lab into one? She was so nice to hand it over, too~!"

The Evil Emperor let out a callous cackle and he held out his arms, the hellish nightmare that was his robotics factory filling him with glee. And if Jo was concerned now, she was going to feel even worse as the conveyor dragged them down... down towards a chomping furnace that apparently would spill death to them both if they were foolish enough to enter it. The only problem was... there wasn't any exit to take!

Zurg was leading them both to a fiery, molten doom and he didn't seem to shed a wink!

"You sure seem to be in your element," Jo said with a nervous chuckle. And it was only fifteen minutes ago that was moping about being out of the groove. Ahahahaha. Ha. Yeah, right. He was looking pretty evil to her right now, but she was sure that if she said that out loud he'd defend that she'd barely scratched the surface of his evil side.

No wonder he'd wanted Carrie's lab. It made sense now. But the place still looked enormous to Jo. She had never been introduced to large-scale production, not even while working for the catwoman herself.

Jo hadn't been that scared up until this point. She was enjoying herself despite all the nasty surprises. It was a whole new experience for her to be in such a large robotics plant and she couldn't wait to actually see where all the robots were made.

Until the conveyor belt began to lead them to certain death.

"Uh, Big Z? Maybe we took a wrong turn. Isn't the exit, well...." Where was the exit? There didn't seem to be one! "...not through there?" she ended on a little nervous note.

But Zurg hadn't heard a word the young woman said. Instead, he had resumed snapping his fingers with the beat of factory's heart, lost in the motions. And all the while... the couple were getting closer to the chomping maw's teeth, the heat starting to prickle their skin. Jo would be able to see the rotating metals swishing inside, their forms quickly eradicated into molten goop within seconds. Imagine what it could do to them!

    Still no exit in sight...

Oh, craters. The situation was clearly deteriorating. The belt was leading them into a fiery mouth that wanted to gobble them right up and all Zurg was doing was snapping his fingers to some unknown beat or music that only he could hear!

"Big Zee? Big Zeeeee?" Jo tugged on his cape once, twice, then just kept tugging on it repeatedly in the same beat of his fingertips, trying to get his attention. "Huge furnace, heat, conveyor belt heading right for it. Danger, danger, Evil Emperor!"

Oh, craters.... this was probably going to hurt.

But just as it seemed the furnace would consume with a flash, the Evil Emperor was still bobbing his head with the beat and wrapped a secure arm around Jo's waist. And with the mechanic tightly in tow he reached up with a carefully-timed hand and took hold of a passing by chain. There was a sudden tug and they were both uplifted away from the ominous furnace, deposited upon yet another conveyor belt overhead. This one lead to a dark and still tunnel that seemingly went on forever.

"As if I'd let us burn up, Jo." Zurg politely chuckled, his broad chest heaving.

At the very end was a glow and it grew brighter... and brighter... and so bright Jo would have to shield her eyes momentarily. Once the eyes grew settled she would see that they were in a vast chamber. There were many conveyor belts now and they each went through a series of machines. The first slammed down upon the metal bars, spitting out the makings of a body. The second, legs; the third, arms; the fourth, a head; and so forth and so forth. The pattern would repeat itself until a fully-finished robot had been constructed: the end result a Hornet.

And given how many conveyor belts were churning these things out, at least fifteen Hornets were constructed at any given time. Talk about production quotas! Why was Zurg making so many?

The answer would be revealed soon enough as the Evil Emperor finally hopped off the belt and continued to stride on along. There were no longer any minions now, and as the Evil Emperor drew closer to the center, Jo should discern that it was oddly.... vacant. There were several tubes of thick cable-like wires and control panels but nothing in the center. What went there?

"Oh, daaaaaarling~! Daddy's home~!" Zurg called out, his voice echoing alongside the groans and moans of machine and metal.

"Whoa!" All Jo could do was cling to him when he grabbed the chain, and they were suddenly lifted high overhead and deposited onto another belt. Jo still clung to him for a few moments longer, before realizing that he was chuckling at her naivety.

She puffed her cheeks out. How was she supposed to know there wasn't some new hidden passage beyond the furnace? Although sure, the possibilities of them having to go through a furnace to reach it were.... less than zero. But Jo had been left in the dark and she was the stranger here. Could you blame her for not knowing how to react?

She pressed her face into his arm when the bright light encased them in its glow, but let Zurg go when they could see again. And now.... finally, robots! Jo looked around her eagerly, watching all the machines go about their work. This was real robot-making! Not the arduous and exhausting long process she had to go through as a single mechanic. This was top-of-the-line mass production! And the way robots were supposed to be made!

She almost didn't notice him hop off the belt, but she hopped off after him, wondering why there weren't any minions all around. This room seemed vast, yet oddly empty....

"Daddy?" Jo repeated, bewildered. Was he talking to Shalti or someone entirely else? She would have to wait to find out.

Jo didn't have to wait long to get her answer. Something let out a shrill cry from above and as soon as it happened, a massive object literally slammed into the center before them. Sparks of electricity zig-zagged everywhere, the dust disturbed and obscuring Jo's vision. No doubt the shockwave had knocked her off her feet, but Zurg still remained standing and he smiled. If not a bit deranged...

There was the sound of clicking, machinery scraping against the metal floor, gears groaning. Whatever that something was produced a menacing red glow from within the haze and something whipped out. Was that a mechanized tentacle!? It was so close to Jo that she could make out the intricate pistons and hissing components, the mechanic no doubt already aware of the jagged claw at the tip. Another tentacle came out, and then another, and another, and another! There were suddenly mechanized tentacles everywhere and a massive sphere, sparking with high voltage, swiped the dust away with its two large, mismatched claws situated beneath its single red eye.

""X'ngtaat~!" The Evil Emperor cooed lovingly to the agitated machination of unknown make. "How is my girl doing, hmm~?"

The thing known as X'ngtaat let out another high-pitched cry and slammed one of its oiled tentacles mere centimeters from the Evil Emperor, the machine deeply angered at something. With a severe spark of its tesla coils it lunged itself at him, its body creating sparks in its dragging, and it snapped its claws furiously before his face.

But Zurg didn't seem to mind and he held out his hands apologetically. "Darling, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to leave you alone like that, but, well, things happened! Now stop that. You're being rude to my guest! Say hello to Jo. She came down here to see you~!"

X'ngtaat snapped its lone eye upon the mechanic and it slithered itself over to her, the gears groaning and the clacking claws digging their way to Jo. Before the mechanic could do a thing the monstrosity was already upon her, looming.

Jo certainly was knocked off her feet, her ears still ringing from that nail-scratching shriek. She tried to look through the dust and sparks, a few feet behind Zurg and still on the floor on her backside as her eyes feel upon it.

It was a machine, but not just any machine. It was a sphere-shaped robot, with metallic tendrils and a blazing red eye, similar to the one Jo had seen on the building just as they'd entered. And it was mad at Zurg, slapping its clawed tentacles around them. Or maybe Jo had to say she. It appeared to have a female gender, though she did not speak and only screamed shrilly with static.

And then X'ngtaat made right for her.

Jo made a sound of surprise and scampered backwards, dragging her rump along the floor, but the robot was already upon her. Jo shrank, feeling very small, brown eyes huge, and pretty spooked. She didn't think that the robot would hurt her with Zurg being around, but you never knew....

"Uh, hi?" she squeaked, tensing up just in case something went wrong.

And that's when Jo thought wrong.

With a shriek X'ngtaat snaked one of its tentacles around Jo's ankle and dragged her a good ways across the vicinity before lifting up the mechanic and bringing her closer to the red eye for inspection. Clearly the robot was fussed over something and it focused the bulk of its anger upon the Evil Emperor with another crackling spark of its coils.

"X'ngtaat, please." Zurg scolded the jealous machine with a shake of his finger. "You put her down, now. She's a guest and we don't harass guests."

But X'ngtaat had other ideas and it dragged itself over towards one of the online machines--the one with many moving parts that would be sure to make mince meat of the poor mechanic. Hefting Jo over the spinning and grinding gears, X'ngtaat tilted its eye at the Evil Emperor almost as if to goad him. It certainly had a funny sense of humour, that much Jo already found out!

Jo would admit that up until this point she hadn't been truly afraid. No, really, she hadn't. She'd been surprised, a little unnerved, weirded out, but never really and truly fearful. But all that changed when the robot suddenly grabbed her by the ankle and dragged her closer for inspection. If the mechanic thought that the factory was hot, just being stared down by that huge red eye was even worse.

And as if that wasn't enough, the robot apparently didn't like her one bit. It dragged her over to a machine, hanging her upside-down from the same ankle, where Jo got the best view of the whirring metal parts below. And she realized the same thing the robot had.

Suffice to say that Jo decided now was the perfect time to scream.

"X'ngtaat, really! You are making Daddy very upset you know that, don't you?" The Evil Emperor chastised with more bite.

But the robot only let out a sickening laugh, its gears and clacking producing the echoing effect it needed as it craned its eye low enough to be level with her eyes. In hindsight the massive sphere of envy reminded Zurg of an owl with its head comically tilted, but there was nothing comical about X'ngtaat's act.

"I'm going to count to three..." He warned, holding up three fingers for the robot to count. "And if I get to three, you're in deep trouble, my girl. One".

X'ngtaat reared its head back, its body language quick and flustered. That didn't last for long, however, and it soon resumed its devious antics. When Zurg counted to one, it released one of three claws around Jo's boot, dangling her precariously. Again, it tilted its eye in defiance and appeared skittish. Was it tempting him...?

"Two. I mean it, X'ngtaat...." The Evil Emperor lowered his voice this time.

And again, X'ngtaat removed one more claw, this time Jo being held with only the tip of X'ngtaat's main claw. Would he dare count to one now? It hopped around a bit, eager to see if he would. To X'ngtaat this was merely a fun, cruel game! With a spark it quickly looked from Jo to Zurg, and back again in hasty succession. Count! Count, count, count! Count to three!

"Three! Don't you dare do it, my girl!"

As if out of spite, X'ngtaat stared blankly at the Evil Emperor and it let go. Just like that.

    Bye-bye went Jo.

Oh, no, a counting game. Jo suppressed a small whimper. These never ended good, especially for the parties that dangled above certain death. This robot was really acting like a spoiled child that yearned for attention and knew she could get away with just about anything. Probably not this, but she could get away with a lot.

Jo just swallowed nervously, trying not to struggle. She'd been through more near-death experiences in the past hour than she had in a lifetime. Maybe the robot would be nice and listen to Zurg and put her down before--

    NOT LIKE THAT!
