Lawrence followed Jo over to the worktable, one hand trailing down to the spot on his chest she was pointing out on the schematics. "There? How peculiar."

He took a second to run a self-diagnostic, to try to get some sort of reading from the area, but to no avail. "As far as my OS is concerned, whatever might be there doesn't exist. I can't think of a likelier place for a piece of hardware I'm not supposed to know about, can you? You'll have to take a look inside of there to be sure."

At that the butler looked slightly uncomfortable. "I've never liked this part, but it has to be done."

"Huh." Both grubs shrugged and eyed Lawrence. Could they find it? Could they? Not to be deterred, the grubs rubbed their hands over each other in a thinking fashion and skittered to the robot. "We have a suspicion where it is."

Boldly, they looked at each other and pointed to the robot's... nether regions.

"I think what you want is right there, uh-huh."

And they said this with 100% certainty!

Well, Jo had known it was pretty low, but not that low. "A-Are you boys sure?" Sure, Lawrence was just a robot and didn't really have anything there, but.... it was still the idea that got to her. She didn't want to do anything until Lawrence gave her permission. It was his body, after all.

"....Mind if we take a look?" she asked carefully.

"Uh-huh!" The grubs nodded their little buggy heads, smiling. "We're sure this time! Whoever installed this had a sense of potty humour!" Definitely not their kind of humour, though...

Lawrence's right optic twitched a bit. These Grubs really didn't value their own lives, did they? He smiled at them, but it didn't reach his optics. "You know I can retrieve my weapon with a thought, don't you? But I'm not going to do that because I'd hate to make a mess of Jo's workshop, and also no one is looking down there. I will allow Jo to examine the blank spot on the schematics, but that is all."

"Unfortunately...." Jo eyed the schematics again and bit on her lower lip to keep from laughing. "Sorry, boys, but it's not there. Like I said before, it's around his chest area. Right here." She showed the general area over the blue sash tied around the robot's waist.

"Now, we can take a look and see what's in there if you don't mind, Lawrence. What'll it be?"

"Let us see that!" The grubs snatched the schematics and paused. Oh. Ohhhhh. When they realized their error they proceeded to giggle ashamedly. "Oooooh, so that's why! We were looking at him upside down."

Typical Zurg minions. But at least they meant well.

Lawrence resisted the urge to facepalm at the Grubs, though he couldn't help but indulge in some snark. "Upside down? Wonderful; I feel like I'm in such capable hands . . . where did you two get your engineering degrees from?"

He wasn't intending for them to answer, and so he faced Jo again. "Yes, this is more or less why I came here; there's no time like the present to get it over with. Would you need me in low power mode or full shutdown? You'll have to press my off switch for the latter, but I'm not showing you where it is with these two still nearby."

"Hey, we may be lower level assistants, but we've got something the other technicians don't have!" The one on the left stated.

"Yeah!" The other nodded in turn. "We got heart! Make the robot power down, your Vile Loveliness" It asked, tugging on her jumpsuit pant. "Turn him off so his defense systems do not activate as we try to work with him."

It was sound advice for once.

Wow, these guys were just determined to work on Lawrence. Ohkaaaay...

Jo did her best not to smirk at the title they had for her, knowing full well where it stemmed from, so she just dusted off her hands and placed them upon her hips. The stern look she gave the robot was priceless as she tried to discern any information she could from his structure. "Well..." She began slowly, pursing her lips. "It's worth a shot. Lawrence? Mind powering down? I promise I'll make these guys wash. Good."

Lawrence still looked rather disgusted at idea of those Grubs working on him, but he finally relented with a sigh. "Oh, very well. If I keep being stubborn about this, we'll never finish in time for the raid. I expect you to keep that promise, though."

With that, he locked most of his joints with the exception of his arms and hands, then reached for one of the gold buttons on his left wrist. The top of it slid back, revealing a small switch that he then pressed. He had just enough time to let his arms hang loose at his sides before the shutdown overtook him, his optics and other lights all going dim at once.

"I will." She nodded, then smiled. "No worries! I'll make sure nothing goes wrong."

As soon as Lawrence had shut down, the mechanic turned to the grubs. "Go wash your hands in the bathroom in the hallway, then we'll get started on Lawrence."

"Aye, aye, your Vileness!" The grubs saluted and were off like that, leaving a little dirt cloud in their very image behind. Yuck with a capital Y! There was much racket and things shuffling back there, but soon the water was running followed by hisses and moans. Water! Why'd it have to be water and soap!? But they washed, scrubbing their faces with their hardened forearms like some bugs were known to do and didn't take too long. When they came back they were squeaky clean save for their jumpsuits and one could tell that the grubs were utterly disgruntled.

"Bleeeugh, we hate cleaning..." They belly-ached to their feet, heads hung.

At least they had their tools and nick-knacks, appearing ready for labour.

Lawrence was of course unaware of everything, shut down as he was. It was quite a sign of trust on his part, to shut himself down in front of people he barely knew. Without power, he as an artificial intelligence technically ceased to exist, and wouldn't exist again until someone out there pressed that on button.

However, on a level deeper than software, deeper than hardware, something was still there. It was something Lawrence wasn't sure he had, and if told he did, he would probably deny the existence of. It was that strange thing called a soul, and it was dormant just like the rest of him. In that dormancy, he dreamed, or perhaps saw something the Zoni left to him . . .

The Zoni had not always been the guardians of time, and their ability to travel back and forth through it was something that came naturally. However, the energy beings had to take special forms to interact with the material universe, which limited their power somewhat. That was why Orvus forged the Chronoscepter, to better focus his power while in the lower worlds. It had incredible power on its own, but in his hands it could accomplish nothing less than miracles, at least in the eyes of the sentient organics he came across.

Some of those organics were more brilliant than others, and one civilization seemed to shine brightly enough that Orvus decided to share the gift of time travel with them. The Fongoid civilization excelled at science and the arts, and it only seemed time travel would add to their greatness.

However, Orvus was wrong. What the Fongoids had in intelligence, they lacked in common sense. They abused their gift, to the point where the universe could no longer handle the strain. A tiny rip in the fabric of spacetime formed, destruction spreading far and wide . . . it seemed like the universe was about to end.

But in the wake of the chaos, Orvus appeared once again, using the Chronoscepter to try to seal the rift. In the end even it wasn't enough, and so he called his brethren . . . with all of their power together, the Zoni constructed the Great Clock on top of the rift, finally putting an end to the destruction.

Time would have to be monitored by the Zoni from that day forward. Orvus had liked to think he'd done a fair job, but then, Nefarious came . . .

"Cleaning up's not that bad!" Honestly, those grubs could be so dramatic at times. Cute, but dramatic. "Grab your tools, boys. We're going in!"

Jo herself grabbed one of her own tools, then about-faced, eying Lawrence up and down. She felt around his midsection for a few long moments, trying to find the hinge that would open up the compartment. It was right on the edge between the blue sash and his white shirt, and Jo undid the screws and bolts and pried open the compartment gently.

"Here's where the real adventure begins." She flicked on a light and cast it over Lawrence's insides. "See anything amiss yet, boys?"
