"Hmph, you bet your little frilled, finned friend it was fun." Too many 'f's in that sentence than he liked, but he digressed. Zurg dusted his hands, relieving them of any evidence of his crime, and he watched as the little box he had thrown deactivated with a wink and self-destructed.

Hmm, that went better than he thought. Success for evil! And Jo seemed to find it entertaining, too!

"I have recently developed an experimental device that can briefly animate the inanimate. Metroman inspired me to make it, seeing as how he's perfect in everything. Too perfect." The Evil Emperor wasn't sure he liked that. Liked that at all.

But he was liking spending some time with Jo, so he dropped the distant scowl and casually dodged as one of the creatures leaped on by. Looked like some grazing beast. "Where to now? Do they have anything... tame, and less... creepy."

Jo got to her feet and dusted herself off. "Metro Man, huh? Oh, don't let him get to you. He doesn't seem to have much between his ears, if you get my drift." She tapped her temple, then shrugged. "But maybe that's heroes for you. If they settle down they get more mellow."

She looked around, hands on her hips. "If you want to try out creepy again, we could try the Haunted House. I think I noticed it the last time in that corner over there. But since you're not up for creepy, we can go to the bumper cars to the left, or try the shooting range ahead."

She checked the map again. "Yup, those three are the closest. You choose now!"

Funny, people often said he didn't have much between--in this case--horns. And he certainly mellowed when Lightyear disappeared. Nearly went mad without purpose, too. Best not to think about that.

Zurg listened to what Jo listed, his face going from scowling to frowning. He didn't like creepy, that was sure. But... they had already done bumper cars before, and he shot so many things it wasn't fun anymore. So... that meant...

"I guess we'll go to the..." Oh, craters, was he really going to say this? "...Haunted House."

He didn't pack any bed wetting underwear.

"Hot rockets!" Jo gave the air a triumphant punch, then took Zurg's hand in hers. "I'll be fun, you'll see!"

She led him over to the Haunted House, a large line already in wait. It took them ten minutes or so to get in, but when the operator finally gave them the get-go, Jo eagerly tugged Zurg inside.

It was dark and hard-to-see inside, despite the light still illuminated from the opening behind them. Once they took a turn to the right, venturing deeper inside, all light disappeared, and since it was night outside, there was barely any light seen from the cracks by their feet. Fog lingered in the air, swirling by their ankles, and the darkness was accompanied by spooky sounds. Sudden bursts of maniacal laughter and screams bounced across the walls, echoing in the distance. Glass cases with cut-off hands still twitching, brains and eyeballs in jars that turned to look at you as you passed, and shambling skeletons stretching hands towards you filled the hallway as they passed. Some people in front of them and behind them screamed and grabbed their friends or partners. But so far, Jo wasn't impressed.

"This is scary?" she snorted. "This is tamer than a movie about fluffy yukari." And yukari weren't even all that tame to begin with!

She hoped it got better the deeper they went. So far, she was disappointed. She wanted a good scare!

Oh, but Zurg was plenty scared. In fact, he was keeping as close to Jo as possible, shaking. When the hands twitched and the eyeballs gawked at him the Evil Emperor found himself beside with fright and he couldn't take the sudden light effects. It was too humid and congested in here, he felt like he couldn't breathe, and his wild imagination wasn't helping. This was too much! All too much!

"I do not like this place!" He shouted, trying to get his voice over the blasted cackling and spooky sound effects. It was easy to do, but Zurg still felt apprehensive.

And his anxiety only got worse when Jo led them in deeper, the Evil Emperor digging his heels into the ground and blubbering random, silly excuses. He had high blood pressure! He was seizure prone! He had this, and this, and this! But nothing he could say would deter Jo, and he only grudgingly went right on along.

That was until he heard the man with the chainsaw rev up his weapon and charge at them from seemingly nowhere.

    "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! IT'S BARRY'S COUSIN! RUN!"

Zurg squawked and shoved Jo faster, away from the madman at their backsides. He might as well have left a feather trail in his wake at this point.

"What did you say!" Jo shouted, also trying to be heard, but her voice, along with Zurg's previously, was swallowed up by all the sound effects. Well, this was annoying.

Instead, she grabbed Zurg's hand and ushered him onwards. She felt him grip her hand tighter and she gave him a reassuring squeeze back. Couldn't he see in the dark? Funny, she thought twilight was when his eyes were at their best.

They passed more silly attractions, ghosts and vampires and more creatures of the night, or whatever it was that was commonly found scary on Earth and Jo just found tacky. Where were the space monsters? The flesh-eating aliens? The Evil Emper--wait, scratch that one.

But when they turned a corner, and someone with a chainsaw confronted them, the sound loud enough to make Jo's ears rings, she did jump in surprise. "Barry's cousin? What're yo--whoa!"

Zurg shoved her forwards and they stumbled into the next room, where the floor was apparently.... squishy? She nearly lost her balance and fell at the sudden change in movement, and she wondered why her feet sank into the floor. What in the cosmos was this stuff made out of? She could barely walk!

"Watch your step! They've done something to the floor!" Jo warned Zurg, hoping that he didn't fall flat on his face with their previous momentum.

    Well, that was just terrific.

The moment they fell into another room Zurg heard her warning too late, and he gawked in wide-eyed disbelief as his shoes--his nice, polished shoes--were now caked in squishy jelly! And were those rats!? RATS!? Carriers of plague and pestilence!?

"I took an hour polishing these shoes! AN HOUR!" He howled, sliding this way and that as he tried to urge them both out quickly.

He wanted out! Out, out, OUT! Where was the bloody exit!? Rides like this were required to have exits!

"There!" Jo pointed to a sliver of light from across the room. "That's got to be the way out!"

Removing her gloves and stuffing them into a pocket, Jo trudged through the gooey mess that made up the floor, each step becoming more difficult as they progressed. Was the floor becoming stickier or was it just her?

Soon, they reached the door, and Jo climbed out, gripping the door's frames as she stumbled into the next room. "Well, the floor trick sure was different." She hoped that the rest of the haunted house attractions picked up soon.

"Ew, ew, ew!" Zurg could only grimace as he followed Jo's lead, silently thankful when they left that awful mess. Just disgusting! He was going to write a nasty letter to the head manager here!

When they were at last free, the Evil Emperor took this reprieve to breathe, but it was short-lived. ".....Where are we, and... where is everyone else?" He asked.

Wasn't there a couple before them...?

"I dunno," Jo said, starting down the hallway. "But listen." She paused, looking around her, but there was nothing but the room behind them and the narrow space stretched out before them, its end lost in the dark. "The screams and laughs have stopped."

Spooky.... Jo was finding the lack of sound more unnerving than their presence. She started down the hallway, her hands pressed against the wall for balance, but she immediately jerked back her hands. "Eurgh! There's slime on the walls!" She wiped her hands on her pants and tried to stay on the middle of the path.

And where there was silence, there was suddenly music. A soft, eerie tune, almost mournful in nature, like someone playing a eulogy for a lost lover. It was some sort of piano, and Jo wasn't sure if she wanted to follow it or not.

Things were certainly turning out spookier, but maybe the mechanic had gotten more than she bargained for?

".....At the risk of being redundant, I really think this was a bad idea."

Zurg had heard the instrumental dirge, too, the sharp keys pinging his horns and causing him to wince. Oh, this was so not his ride. Not in the least. He was grateful to keep his hands to himself to avoid the slime. Ew, poor Jo. He wasn't holding her hands until she washed!

"Are we to... go on?" The Evil Emperor whispered again. If they didn't get out soon, he was going to make an exit himself!

Jo didn't want to say she agreed with him, but her curiosity was getting the better of her. She wanted to see just how scary this haunted house would turn out to be.

"We go on," she said determinedly, taking one of his hands and leading him forwards.

The music started to grow louder and louder. Jo could see something at the end of the hallway. A door opened up to a room full of mirrors, and she couldn't help but jump when she first saw her distorted reflection. But she was used to funhouse mirrors and didn't pay their reflections any heed.

"Come on, this way." She tried to weave a path through the mirrors, trying to pinpoint the source of the music and the way out of this room.

She should have paid more attention to their reflections, however. She might have noticed a third reflection looming behind them if she had better eyes....

    Eeeeurgh, she grabbed his hand!

Zurg grimaced in disgust at the sticky sensation, but yet again, he let her lead the way. It was only a ride, after all, and as hard as that was to keep repeating within his mind it was truth. If only the truth was much more... Zurg-friendly.

As the music grew louder, he had half expected a trapdoor--you know, because the music was obviously a lure--but when they emerged into a room filled with mirrors, his eyes lit up along with his temper.

"....Mirrors?" He nearly spat, irritated. They dared to put mirrors? All he could see were his distorted selves and all of them got him to snarl, the Evil Emperor genuinely bothered as they snarled back, distorted. He hated mirrors! He hated rats, being dirty, but most of all... mirrors.

However, his pet peeve most likely clouded his vision as he, too, failed to realize a third reflection amongst their own.

"I know, Zurg. It's alright." Jo gave him another reassuring squeeze as she tried to find a path through the mirrors, but it was like a maze. They were surrounded on all sides, and the only way to go through was to squeeze through narrow openings. And although Jo did not have a mirror-problem like Zurg did, after five minutes of going around in circles, she was almost ready to call it quits.

"Ugh, this is annoying. I don't even know where we came from now!" She huffed and leaned back against a mirror. That creepy music wasn't helping either. She couldn't figure out where it was coming from. It seemed to surround them, bouncing against the mirrors, the walls, everything.

She looked dully at the mirror across from her, and caught a flicker of movement in a corner. She frowned and looked around, but couldn't see anyone else but them. With a shrug, she settled back against. It might have just been a trick of the light. But this time she heard a rustling too, and a larger flicker of movement, this time from her right.

She felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end and stepped away from the mirror. "Zurg?" she whispered. "Did you see that?"

"See what." Zurg growled, having a fist ready to strike one such mirror for mocking him. His head didn't look like that! Insolence!

He settled down, however, upon hearing the unease in Jo's tone and he stood still; listening, waiting. There was... rustling? Yes, there was something going against the looping music--which was so bothersome, by the way--and it held a rhythm similar to...

"We're not alone in here...." He took out his ray and let it warm up, the firearm emitting a high-pitch whine.
