Zurg parted his fingers to peek at Jo, and frowned. Hmm, where should she sit? "Any open seats?" He barked again, sitting up straighter.

The grubs all turned around on their swivel chairs and held up their hands, shaking their hands. "No available seats, your Evilness!" They said in a timed drone. "You implemented that no more seats than originally allowed were to be installed!"

Oh, that's right... Well! He certainly couldn't make Jo stand... could he? What other options did he have? Make Jo stand and incur her wrath, or let Jo sit on his lap and get all sorts of naughty gossip for the entire month.

With a sigh he pressed the control lever forward and the arm extended closer towards the edge. "All right... I guess you can sit on me, but no squirming! It's not very stable, you see." Zurg extended his arms wide, motioning for Jo to leap.

    He'll catch her, he promised!

Of course the grubs only sneaked glances, snickering at their stations.

"Er...." Well, Jo didn't really mind sitting on his lap, but didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable about it either. She could feel her cheeks already growing hot with embarrassment and the eyes of the grubs on her. "Alright."

She braced herself, then jumped.... but it wasn't as graceful as she'd hoped. She banged her knee on the armrest and slipped, her rump falling hard onto his lap as she grabbed his neck quickly (and probably tightly) to steady herself.

    "Er.... ehehehehe..... sorry?"

"....I give you a 6 on the landing, and a 7 on the execution. What do you all score?" Zurg asked, his voice muffled thanks to Jo's intruding body. Several grubs hastily scribbled something onto boards. They then turned around, holding mainly sixes and sevens with one five.

    BAM!

The grub's sign with the five was shot on the spot, and Zurg slammed his still-smoking ion cannon upon an armrest. "WE DON'T GIVE ANYTHING LOWER THAN SIXES HERE!" He bellowed. "We must be positive graders." Was the explanation.

When that was all settled, Zurg put his weapon back and snapped his fingers. "SYSTEMS CHECK!" Hope Jo didn't mind all the yelling. "THRUSTERS!"

"Good to go!" A grub yelled.

    "BRAKES!"

    "Already starting to release!"

    "FUEL!"

    "Filled!"

    "NAVIGATIONAL SYSTEMS!"

    "Online!"

    "GRAVITY BUMPERS!"

    "Gravity-ing!

"SURROUND SYSTEM WITH BLOOD-PUMPING MUSIC AND POLAROID SHADES!?"

And at that, something started to sound on the speaker system and the grubs put on black, spiff shades while jamming at their controls. Oh, yeah. Nothing like good, old space techno to get the juices flowing.

"We're all set, your Evilness!" A grub shouted over the music.

Putting on his own shades, he handed a pair to Jo and buckled up. Oh, yeah. Nothing like good, old space techno. Nothing. "Activate... the bay doors." He said with a slow, dramatic edge.

Something released a deep boom ahead and light from the outside world poured in as the towering bay doors rumbled apart, the violent world of Planet Z finally seen. There was a storm working up and lightning struck constantly, accenting everything with flashes. Oh, yeah. It was almost blinding if it weren't for the shades.

"On my mark." Zurg held up three fingers, the grubs getting ready for him to begin. "FORGET THE COUNTDOWN! LET'S RIDE! HIT IT!"

If Jo was at the edge of her seat, she was now literally at the edge. The moment Zurg gave the word the ship lurched with its building-sized engines and everything was slammed back due to the sheer awesome g-forces at work. The massive ship lurched out of the bay with a roar and it was fully bathed in the planet's red glow, the tune still jamming and heads still bobbing.

"Man, I love lift off." Zurg mentioned randomly. Jo was probably plastered to something.

Jo tried to right herself on her lap and tried not to squirm too much as she took the offered shades and slipped them on. And then the speakers kicked in with space techno. Say, that was some good music. Jo caught herself swinging to the beat, then realized that they were already lifting off. She tried not to move around too much and kept a loose arm around Zurg, pressing the side of her face against his arm. His voice was sometimes pretty loud!

But at lift off, gravity started its natural shift, and Jo found herself pressed against Zurg almost suffocatingly tight. One arm gripped the armrest behind her and the other gripped Zurg's arm as she tried not to slip off and become a bunzel cake on the floor.

"Lift off sure is something," Jo managed, her glasses slipping down her nose.

    "ALRIGHT, KILL THE MUSIC!"

The moment they reached space all was silent and the previous shenanigans were gone, Zurg putting away his shades and helping Jo adjust herself. "Aren't they great~!" He smiled, obviously proud. "What do you think of the ship so far? Can't you just hear the engines?" There was a soft purr coming from behind and the trip was very, very smooth.

    "The finest in evil technologies!"

Jo sat up, trying not to move too much, and gave him back the sunglasses, looking around. Sure enough, she could hear the low thrum of the engines, and she couldn't help but smile and sigh. This was familiar territory now, and she could tell that everything was running smoothly.

"It certainly is a fine example of technology," she agreed, fidgeting a little. "Do you have a copy of blueprints you could give me so I can examine them?"

The grubs had to cough and grumble at that, and this time it was Zurg who was fidgeting. "Well, you see, Jo..." He began, hoping his choice of words wouldn't upset her. "I follow a strict policy about my intellectual properties. I know you like to examine and tinker around with mechanics, but... well, there are just some things best left... hidden. If you know what I mean."

In other words, he was politely saying he wasn't ready, if ever, to part with such high-tech, evil knowledge.

"Oh." She understood what he meant. She was a tad disappointed, but she knew when there had come a subject that she couldn't barter on no matter how much she tried. "Well, that's alright! I'm here, seeing everything. That's enough for me!"

She settled down more comfortably on his lap, enjoying the view from up here on his throne, despite the height. Hey, she could get used to watching people tinkering away down below like this. "How long is it going to take us to reach Portal City?" she asked curiously.

Oh, look how disappointed she seemed! Gah, Jo, why do you ask to accomplish the hardest things at times? You know he couldn't give her any important, significant pieces of information! Zurg rubbed the back of his head awkwardly and was glad she didn't seem bothered much by it. Well, at least she was being a good sport.

"How long? Hmm, that's a good question. HOW LONG UNTIL ENTRY TO PORTAL CITY!?" The purple pain bellowed again without warning.

A grub spun around in its seat and brought up some calculations. "Five minutes, your Evilness." It croaked in its wet tongue.

"Five minutes?!" Zurg gawked. "We have the biggest engines this side of the gamma and it takes five minutes to reach the only city within radius!?" He had good reason to be miffed! "It should only take a minute!"

The same grub shivered and shielded its head. "But we thought you'd like a more scenic route!"

"Scenic route!?" Zurg snorted. "What for!?"

"For a more romantic setting in space!" Another grub added with a shaky smile, helping its nodding comrade. Oh, those little...

The Evil Emperor just rubbed his temples, eyes closed, and proceeded to groan. "It's going to be one of those days, isn't it..."

"Five minutes?!" Wow, that was fast! Almost too fast! Jo sat up with a jerk, probably startling Zurg in the process. "Oh, sorry! Um.... can we get down? I want to see the view from the starshield before we land!"

Oh.... wait. The reason for the longer route the grubs gave suddenly sank in and she blushed and wished the chair would swallow her up and hide her from view. Oh cosmos, if the staff was onto them they might as well just shout it out for the whole world to hear.

"This isn't.... a problem for you, is it?" she mumbled, rubbing the back of her neck awkwardly.

"No, no..." Zurg sighed, sitting up. "I cleared the problem stage long ago, and if my staff knows what's best for them they won't utter a pe--TURN AROUND THIS INSTANT!" He hollered instantly.

The grubs all jumped in their seats and hastily spun around, pretending to be busy with something or other. Hmph!

"...as I was saying." He scowled before clearing his throat. "It's not a problem for me anymore, but is it for you? I don't want to make you uncomfortable..."

"No, not at all!" Jo waved her hands and tried to smile. She did feel a little self-conscious, but she wasn't that bothered by it. She could easily get over it. "It's alright. Really."

She fidgeted a bit more, unsure how to get off of Zurg without falling several feet and without forcing him to get up to accommodate her needs either. "Can I see the starshield up close? Or would that be too much trouble?" she quickly added, looking around the bridge. She didn't want to inconvenience him.

"Oh, not at all!" He didn't blame her for wanting off. The position was awkward anyway, and it was best to keep the damage control low with his staff constantly sneaking glances. No good, little...

Gripping her tightly he decided to forgo the obvious route and activated his rocket boots, easily coasting to the ground level and letting Jo back upon her own two feet. There. That was relatively easy and feasible.

"Look away at your leisure." Zurg offered, gesturing to the pitch black abyss of space ahead. One can never forget that initial awe when introduced to the Cosmos themselves.

Jo nearly squeaked in surprise and just held on to Zurg as he activated his rocket boots and glided back down to the floor, where he set her before the starshield, encouraging her to enjoy the view, and she didn't need to be told twice.

She went over to the transparent pane and pressed her hands against it, gazing in amazement at the sea of stars and planets laid bare before her. She could see Planet Z, a red wink in the distance on one end, and what was probably Portal Breach, a blue speck that kept looming closer. She could even see Star Command swirling in orbit and another abandoned space station she couldn't recognize in the distance. But all of these sights were nothing compared to the beauty of the cosmos itself, so harmonious and breathtaking in its natural splendor.

"Wow...." She shivered slightly, feeling dwarfed in comparison. "It's.... it's amazing...."

"It is beautiful, isn't it." Zurg kept his back to the stars, instead deciding to admire the ship's helm. He held his hands clasped behind his back like an old war general did, and he soon resorted to inspecting his staff. "To stand before such an unfathomable entity known as space. There's quite a lot you can experience in it, and yet... there is nothing quite so... empty. You humans, with your quick lives, can easily marvel upon it and never grow bored. Each excursion is another adventure waiting to be told. You could visit another system next to yours and be taken away. Whereas I..."

It became silent for a moment with only the engines and the grubs' clacking away made any noise.

"Well, let's just say even space loses its luster after a few decades. All stars begin to look alike. Every asteroid, every moon, even every world. Ah, well. Just another day in space for us. So!" Zurg clapped his hands and finally faced Jo. "You ready to go home? I bet Proxy is waiting for you to take his shift, hm?"
