    May The Best Robot Win

Post by Jo Pistonne on Thu May 13, 2010 6:02 pm

    The time was up.

Jo strode into the arena, followed by the robot she had just constructed out of scrap metal. She hadn't thought up a name for it yet, but the way it lumbered about hunched on all fours made her think about primates and bananas. Its single eye winked blue, and it performed a series of mechanical clicks and whirs as it focused its gaze upon her.

"Don't worry, Big Guy," she said, patting one of its arms reassuringly. "Our adversary is sure to arrive soon."

Unless he wanted to be a laughing stock, that is.

    "Oh, I'm here, my dear."

From the overhang of a nearby archway, a pair of glaring red orbs flared brilliantly from the darkness, a dual-toned echo accompanying them. A robot battle...Hah! This would be a cake walk!

The Evil Emperor Zurg strode out fully into the sunlight, his battle armour gleaming, and he mentally took note of the hot, blistering sand that littered the arena floor. Spectator benches, podiums, the open sky. He hadn't been here in a good long while. There was no robot behind him or even near him, leaving the question to be: where was his robot?

"Thought you'd have an easy victory? Think again. And cute scrapheap, by the way." He chuckled at the woman's mix-matched, hastily-drawn about automaton. "I'm sure you took your time and skill making it."

When Carrie overheard that there would be a robot fight, she had to show up and watch. Robotics were her passion, after all, and to see what two other minds gifted in the craft could bring to the table was a rare treat. Notepad in hand, Carrie would be sure to take notes of all that was interesting, which, hopefully, would be a lot.

Carrie took her seat and awaited the show, Morgan seated on her shoulder.

Now, Hellboy could sure enjoy a fight. And a robot fight wasn’t any different from two monsters duking it out, right? Though it baffled him how two hastily-constructed robots in an hour’s time could actually put up a fight, he had nevertheless come along to enjoy the show. After all, he was Zurg’s agent and he wanted to see how good a mechanic this Jo really was.

“Mind scootching over a bit?” he asked Carrie, taking the seat beside her and propping his hooves up onto the seat in front of him.

Descending down from the ceiling on a hoverpad, Zakharov floated down towards the arena. He connected his Glasses's microphones to the Arena's sound system, amplifying his speech. Levitating a few feet off the arena floor, Zakharov focused the attention on him by dimming the main lights and activating a spot light. All was silent for a moment; an oasis of peace in a desert of chaos.

    Scientific robot brawlin destruction chaos.

"Citizens of the Breach! It is offically time to commence the scheduled robot rumble between our two contestants!" Zakharov boomed out.

Zakharov was filled with pride and glee being able to be the Master of Ceremonies for the robot competition. Prokhor was very enthusiastic with robotics, and was glad that an event was being held pertaining to them. He was also quite interested as to who would be the victor of the fight.

"Will the contestants please bring their robots to the center arena?" the academician called out.

Morgana didn't even truly understand what a robot was. Constructs of steel, powered by electricity, gears working in an intricate pattern to make the whole thing move? A self-sustaining energy reaction in which magic played no part? This concept was not only alien to her, but most people from her world would deem it impossible and absurd. So, of course, this was something she had to see.

Morgana took a seat beside Carrie.

"Don't mind me, darling, I'm just here to learn." She said, sensing Hellboy's disdain for her presence.

"This cute scrapheap is going to do some heavy damage to your robot." Jo crossed her arms over her chest and stepped back, allowing her robot to step forwards.

It was faster than it appeared, its coloring brown with rust and age, but its one blue eye flickered, making minuscule adjustments as it took in its surroundings and assessed the terrain. It made a series of whirring sounds once it reached the center of the arena, looking once back to Jo before refocusing its attention ahead to face its adversary.

"We shall see...." The Evil Emperor smirked cruelly, lifting his arms somewhat and stepping backwards, away from the center of the arena floor.

There was no robot, to be sure; not even when the Provost asked. Had Zurg brought one? Had he made good on his promise?

Only time would tell, as the sand around Jo's robot began to shift and move....

The robot's sensory plating expanded as it looked around in momentary confusion. The sand shifted around it, picking up with the breeze. It whirred petulantly, looking back at Jo, as if to seek reassurance...

Besides the other robot's whimpering, it was unnaturally quiet. Just the breeze, the inaudible sensation of the crowd onlooking, and a rather silent, pensive Evil Emperor with his arms crossed and his expression rather stoic as always.

But one thing was for certain....Jo's robot was not alone.

    Far from it, in fact.

Kiiik kiik kiiik kiiiiiiiiik kiik kik ikikk... The sand seemed to whisper as it parted and sifted around the robot's feet.

Suddenly, in a splash of sand, something dark-blue darted out--a talon plated with gold at its tips snaking out and striking once around the lumbering robot's feet!

Zurg could only watch with a sadistic smile as his robot was finally coming into light.

Hanna moved his tired carcass to the arena, he wanted to see the fight even if he was probably going to fall asleep right in the middle of it. He took a seat next to Hellboy, away from the girls from the other side, not that he didn't liked girls-- he actually found them all very attractive and cute, but perharps it was since he came to portal breach..

he had began to take his distances with the opposite gender; probably because he happened to find them strange.. or that he wanted to have a real date and not a one night that he met in the back door around Worth's place.

he laughed a little to himself-- himself was strange.

anything could make him laugh at this point-- specially the word "ketchup". he giggled, looking at hellboy as if he was going to start laughing out loud. "Hey" he managed to say after snorting a several times.

trying to chew his inner cheek back to a more serious expression-- he looked at the robot fight, putting the rest of his attention on the fight.

Zakharov could not see or detect Zurg's robot in the arena. He knew that Zurg had every intention to battle Pistonne, but felt that he was up to something; Zurg never played fair, did he?

Pfff, "fair"? "Fair" means nothing; this is the real world. Warfare was not fair, so why should this battle be?

    "3 2 1, FIGHT" ZAkharov had yelled.

Suddenly, the sand started shifting, and something popped out and striked Jo's robot.

    That sly dog.

Jo stiffened and clenched her teeth together. Craters! His robot was underneath hers, lurking somewhere in the ground! Darn that Zurg!

Well then... if this was how he wanted to play, two could play this game.

The robot made a series of clicks as it lurched back, away from harm's way, but the talon that had shot out had torn into the metal of one leg. Quick to retaliate, however, it sashayed to the side and dug one large hand into the earth, from where the other robot had appeared, fingers seeking to tear into metal.
